It teaches students to be active listeners. They cannot only be thinking about what they want to say while their hand is raised. They have to listen so they can disagree, agree or add on to what was said before their turn.

I really enjoyed seeing how teachers are using the talking stems and the hand gestures. I think it really helps kids to share their thoughts and keeps the flow of class moving since kids aren't shouting over each other.

I think that having building hand gestures to use from grade level to grade level, building on from kinder on up would be most beneficial for students.

Most grade levels are using the same 3 hand signals for agree, disagree and add-on. The srudents like using the hand signals.

The use of stems and hand gestures allows students to be more engages in their learning and ensures that they are listening to their peers. Students all gain the chance to participate in their learning--included our shy kids who may like to not share out

I see how a universal way to non-verbally respond can help kids participate in the conversation. I think we need universal signs for Thimmig so kids aren't trying to learning new ones every year.

It was great to see what the kids' perspectives are around hand gestures. It would be really nice if there was consistency throughout the building with the gestures, so that it will be easier to transition from one grade to another and build up each other.

By watching the videos, I learned how as the students grow so does their ability to use hand gestures and sentence stems. I also learned so hand gestures I would like to start using with my class. As a school, I feel our next simple step would be to come up with common gestures we are using so the students do not need to learn new gestures each year.

It's great to see/hear how many students want to participate in classroom conversations - both verbally and nonverbally.

Student engagement is higher when using the gestures. I feel like as a school we need to all have the same gestures. The students interviewed seemed to like using the gestures and stems. They felt heard and able to express themselves.

After the video, I noticed that gestures were different but they all had the same understanding as to why we do them and the importance of them. I think it would be helpful if we started in the beginning of the year with the same but the sentence stems can change from grade level to grade level

It was nice to see an example of the hand gestures and sentence stems in the different grade levels. It seems that even though the grade levels were different, the ideas that the students had were "MOST DEFINITLY" similar. :)

I noticed two things- we need consistent gestures, and that the use of gestures is very inclusive for all different kinds of people. ASL would be great!
