It may say that the ill effects of social media on the youth are numerous.-Firstly social meida can make people feel more insecure that is a person is not using social media daily. An individual who uses the social media tends to show the best of him, what is happening to him and express emotional reactions to the post and share the post are becoming social currency. They begin to believe that it is the reaction and sharing the post that makes them seem more famous than their counterparts.

There are 3 main stressors for social media having a negative impact on young people in university. The first stressor is comparison and insecurity. We see other people’s posts on social media and start comparing it to our lives questioning why we are not like them. Secondly, this thing called social currency which is that we are the products and the likes and shares are the buyers. An example of this is taking down a post because not a lot of people have liked the post or shared it enough. The third and final stressor is FOMO which is known as ‘Fear of missing out’. FOMO can cause people to not disable their account because they want to see what people are up to and what they are missing out on. A Canadian study has said that 7/10 students would like to disable their accounts, but they do not want too because of FOMO.

There are three main points about how social media have negative influence on young people at university .first of all insecurity. It is something that you’re insecure of something in the research when they analysed 4 Indonesian teenagers who are on and off on social media the results shows that the active user is always more insecure then the infrequent user(Suciati et al., 2024).Then the second negative impact of social media is social currency which is you can say economy of attention last but not the least the third negative impact is fear of missing out like in the ted talk she said a Canadian research shows 7/10 students are most likely to deactivate their social media account but usually students don’t do it because they have a fear of missing out.

First of all, insecurity is a common feeling when using social media as one only sees another persons "highlight reel" which means that people only post their best times and pictures which according to Suciati (2024) can cause one to feel inferior and insecure resulting in a chance of developing anxiety. Additionally, social media reinforces comparison and validity with likes, comments and shares as these are deemed as factors that are seen as success. Vogal (2014) states that high frequency Facebook use has a strong correlation with depression and decreased well-being. Also thanks to social media, the fear of missing out on things has greatly increased as now everything is more accessible and people are more aware of the things they may seem to think they are missing out. The need to belong, feel close and connected to other people is a basic psychological need that drives human behaviour (Roberts, 2020). This shows how much of an impact social media has on someones' self-worth as nowadays people attribute it towards engagement on social media.

Social currency, insecurity, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) are closely related to each other, especially in the context of social media. To begin with, insecure persons tend to indulge in more social comparisons in which likes, followers, and internet presence are a form of social currency that shows their status and acceptance within a social group. Consequently, recurrent evaluations against idealised materials on the internet have been found to reduce self-worth and enhance a sense of inferiority (Vogel et al., 2014). In turn, this lack of safety also serves as a source of FOMO, or the fear of others having a pleasurable experience without one and the studies prove that the greater the levels of FOMO, the more harms intensive and compulsive use of the social media (Przybylski et al., 2013). Moreover, the persistent presence of peer activity strengthens the sense of fear of social exclusion, and people always want to stay connected so that they can stay socially relevant and belong (Dhir et al., 2018).

V.2.) Nowadays social media play a significant role in the students' life and effects on people differently. First of all the negative impact might be the increasing of insecurity, therefore people tend to compare themselves with others. That argues about 70% users of social media feel high level of depression, anxiety and stress. Social media use predicts satisfaction and self-esteem (Kross et al., 2013, cited in Emily Weinstein, 2017). In addition another effect that impacts negatively is FOMO which means fear of missing out. People spend a huge amout of time on virtual forums, especially teens and young adults. Around 1,65 billion of users usind Facebook as communication (Statista, 2016, cited in Ursula Oberst et al., 2017). This shows the amount people that use social medias and several negative effects such as depression, anxiety and high level of stress.

In conclusion, although social media has strengthened global connectivity and provided marginalised communities with a powerful platform, its negative consequences ultimately outweigh these benefits. While the ability to connect, share ideas, and raise awareness across borders is significant, these advantages become less meaningful if users are left struggling with anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Social media platforms often amplify unrealistic standards, encourage constant comparison, and create environments that can reinforce harmful behaviours rather than challenge them. In addition to its impact on mental wellbeing, concerns surrounding privacy further highlight its dangers. Personal data is frequently collected, monitored, and sometimes misused, leaving users vulnerable to exploitation or manipulation. When individuals are both mentally affected and exposed to privacy risks, the overall value of social media becomes increasingly questionable. Therefore, despite its influence on communication and representation, its psychological and privacy-related harms suggest that its overall impact is more damaging than beneficial.

Social media has of course had a big influence in influencing global connectivity and has clearly had a positive force for empowering marginalised voice and considering how much it is used for promotion nowadays is very encouraging to see, but it is clearly doing more harm by increasing youths mental health toll and how much of the dark side of social media is exposed to them. At this rate it would need to be considered how much damage could be done and in that process future rules should be implemented into the use of social media primarily targeted at the youth and how they should be able to use it.

Social media has had positive influences around the world like increasing global connectivity and helping overlooked people get a platform to use their voices. Even though there are many positives, the negatives still outweigh the positives when it comes to social media. Social media has a bad effect on user's mental health that impacts that way people react and feel towards situations causing mental health issues. In addition to the privacy concerns, they are of no help to the users, making people feel like their personal information is not private and is the world's business. Furthermore, social media will probably get worse for the upcoming generations who are privileged enough to have access to the internet. There could be more cases of mental health issues among the youth and more issues with social media protecting their users' information. Therefore, despite the positives that include connecting the world, the overall impact of social media is negative.

In conclusion, social media has some positive effects, there is also stong argument that the negative outweight the positive .Social media has greatly improved global connectivity, allowing people to communicate instantly across the world. It has also empowered marginalised voices by giving individuals a platform to share their experiences and raise awareness about social issues. However, social media has serious disadvantages. One major problem is its negative impact on mental health, as it can increase anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, especially among young people. In addition, privacy concerns are significant, as personal data can be collected, misused, or exposed without users fully understanding the risks. Overall, despite its benefits, the negative effects of social media are more concerning.
