Throughout the year we experienced many timed writes but we were usually pretty prepared. We feel that we have not improved as much as I would have liked. And as the year went on I felt more sure about my writing and started see an improvement. All three English teachers we experienced this year were very helpful. Coming in for office hours sounds pretty boring but it actually really helps and your questions get answered very quickly. Overall the writing this year had its stress but in the end we all have improved and can continue to do great in our next two years of high school English classes.

This year we had multiple books to read in class and outside of class. We were required to read certain books and certain types of books that displayed the over all theme or unit of the quarter. We feel that since we were pushed to read books that we would not typically read it improved us as stronger readers and gave us more of a variety.
Types of books we read:
-To Kill a Mockingbird
-12 Angry Men
-Of Mice of Men
-Night
-Macbeth
-Animal Farm
-plus 2 OREO books of our choice
While reading these books we had projects, exams, finals, timed writes, and essays based on the books themes, literary devices, and annotations in general. Overall, reading all these books has helped us improve as readers and taught us time management skills to stay on time with ou reading.
In this project we had to analyze a character in our books and find textual evidence that describes their personality.

Analysis and Critical Thinking Skills (Elizabeth)

This year was a true test on all of our abilities to analyze and think under the surface about things such as themes, symbols, motifs, author's tone, and mood. These skills were definitely sharpened when we had to annotate Night and Macbeth. Most of our group members agreed that the close-readings and annotating played a big factor in our growth. Another way we were tested was by the application of our thinking skills in our essays and the timed writes that were assigned to us throughout the year. In these essays/timed writes we were asked to write a says, means and matters. This took a lot of skill with tying the matters back to the main point or argument. Back at the beginning of the year, we had an assignment that was to show what we already knew and, of course, freaked most of us out because we might have not gotten the score we wanted, but later we learned that a growth mindset is important to learn and better ourselves both academically and personally. https://www.mindsetworks.com/webnav/whatismindset.aspx

We are more comfortable asking questions. It helped by us having to come up with our own questions for Socratic Seminars or when we were expected to come to class with 1-3 questions in the unit guides. Another way was commenting on blog and Schoology posts. That led us to explore the route of open ended question leaving room for discussion, not just a one answer question. We have improved on asking relevant questions and not being afraid to ask any question whether it is before, during, or after class.

Scholarly Habits (Gabi)

This year we were taught many different things that helped us acquire scholarly habits. One main example is our scholar cards that we had that pushed us to ask interesting questions and use critical thinking to give intelligent responses. Throughout the year we learned many use fill skills and applied them a lot to our work we did this year. The scholarly habits helped us improve as learners and overall made us better students and prepared us for college and AP Lang.
We used this calendar to stay on track with our reading by making sure we did not procrastinate. This is an example of one of many habits we learned this year.

This class helped prepare us for college because we had to form study groups. The study groups gave us a better understanding of the stories we read and allowed us to interact with people we normally don't communicate with. We were also taught how to study properly and effectively which helped us perform better on tests and quizzes. This class also taught us how to write structured TDQs and essays.
https://padlet.com/mrshousepian/macbethstudygroupco18
