With the right planning, it's also a way to grow a business inexpensively.

By John DiScalaFounder and CEO, Johnny Jet@JohnnyJet

GETTY IMAGES

When I started my career, having an online presence wasn't high on the list of priorities. However, as I grew my business as a travel guide and expert from an email list, it became apparent that not only is there importance to having an online presence, there was also pressure that changed the way we communicated. I had to build rapport but still be engaging.Recognizing this helped me learn and grow my career. While there were moments of doubt, I realized communication and knowing yourself became the keys to progress.Whether on social media like LinkedIn or even a website with your resume and/or portfolio, having an online presence is important for many careers. By having a professional one, you're showing that you care and are serious about any opportunities that come your way. Though it worked for me, many people assume they have to mix their personal and professional presences, but that's not the case. Here's how you can build a professional online presence that will help you nurture relationships and be reciprocal to opportunities while still maintaining your personal, private life. 1. Manage your social networks.Your first step is to make sure that you're not trying to mix your personal life with your professional one. You should always be mindful of what you say and do on the internet, but that doesn't mean you can't have your privacy. Make your personal social media accounts private and create a separate professional profile for each site you want to be active on.Although you can be active anywhere you want, some industries only use certain social media sites. If you're in the construction industry, you likely won't find much value in having a Tumblr account. On the other hand, Facebook or Instagram might be perfect for you.2. Take a high-quality professional picture.Your profile picture is one of the most important factors to consider when you're trying to create a presence and impression that you're proud of. A professional headshot can help.Hire a professional photographer to take a few headshot pictures for you. If you can't afford a professional, ask one of your loved ones to take a picture of you against a solid color background in good lighting. Don't be afraid to get creative but do stay professional.3. Start a blog specific to your line of work.Everyone has an opinion about their industry and are excited to share it with the world. A blog is a good place to start. Yes, there are plenty of articles online already, but there are even more people who don't have a blog or share their professional opinions. Give advice and welcome reader contributions.By having one, you're differentiating yourself and showing colleagues and potential employers that you're dedicated to what you do. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself either. Incorporating vlog posts and offering exclusive content on a social media network can keep your market interested. Use the tools you have available to be the most engaging.4. Become a one-of-a-kind expert that your audience didn't know they needed. The travel industry is a saturated niche. What industry isn't? The truth is, there are a number of people who do what I do, but that doesn't stop me from staying active or sharing my trips with my readers. The thing that separates me from other travelers is that there's only one me. No one else has my personality, values, beliefs, or experiences. These are unique to me and therefore unique for my audience. I've positioned myself as someone who was once terrified of flying but now loves it. To build a connection with people, consider what makes your story unique but relatable. Find your angle and position yourself as an expert in your industry that your audience needs.5. Stay consistent.Try to have the same photo wherever your professional presence is living. You also need to stay consistent when posting on your chosen social media sites and blog. Consistently engage on LinkedIn. Depending on where you're at in your career, you might have time to post daily. Set a schedule you can commit to and stick with it. Recruiters, potential employers, colleagues, and your audience will notice that you're dedicated and active. By staying consistent, you'll stay fresh. Creating daily content can be a challenge but my team and I have found that opening up channels for your readers to contribute not only helps, but it also stimulates new ideas.Creating a professional online presence isn't hard, but it requires effort on your part. By staying consistent, separating your personal life from your professional one, and being your audience go-to person, over time you'll have an online presence that'll exceed your initial expectations.PUBLISHED ON: FEB 21, 2019The opinions expressed here by Inc.com columnists are their own, not those of Inc.com.More from Inc.Don't Let Intuition Rule YouHow to Make the Full-Time Job of Breastfeeding Compatible with WorkHow Traveling Makes You a Better EntrepreneurHere's What One of Tech's Top CEOs Says About Being More ProductiveSponsored Business ContentLIFE INSURANCE COMPARISONWhy Did No One Tell Us About This Life Insurance TrickMOTLEY FOOLOne ASX Stock For The Coming US Legalisation BoomETOROFinancial Institutions Are Safe Investment When Markets Are Uncertain?AGORA FINANCIALAustralia’s ‘Miracle Economy’

The Audacious (and Risky) Strategy That Made Beyond Meat a Billion-Dollar Company

Founder Ethan Brown knew that the success of his plant-based meat products hinged on changing people's fundamental ideas about food.

By Brit MorseWeb producer, Inc.com@britnmorse

Volume 0%

As an entrepreneur, you need to think big. But what if your grand idea completely defies a concept that's long been ingrained in consumers? If you're Beyond Meat founder Ethan Brown, you roll with it and wait for the rest of the world to catch up. Brown's goal is to fundamentally change people's definition of what meat is. To accomplish that, he quit his high-paying job to develop products that look and taste like beef or sausage but are made entirely from plants."To get people to buy in long-term that this isn't just a fad or the latest diet craze that's going to come and go, we really have to get people to buy into the fact that this is indeed meat, it's just meat made from plants," says Allison Aronoff, Beyond Meat's senior communications manager.Brown and his team decided that the best way to convey that message was to get their products placed in the meat section of the grocery store, alongside conventional beef. When they first approached stores, they were only offered a spot in the vegetarian section. Brown viewed the response as a sign that the retailers didn't believe in Beyond Meat's mission. The company turned them down.Brown didn't back down, and eventually Whole Foods decided to take a chance on the brand with placement in the meat section of their stores. From there the products took off and gained the company entrée into other grocery chains. Since January more than a thousand Carl's Jr. restaurants also have been selling Beyond Meat's burgers, according to The New York Times. The company faces serious competition from other "new meat" companies like Impossible Foods, as well as traditional food businesses like Tyson Foods, which recently sold a stake in Beyond Meat because it plans to develop its own alternative meat. Still, it's clear that Brown's idea has caught on: The 10-year old company went public earlier this month at a $1.5 billion valuation.Even with that success, Brown continues to think big, focusing on how plant-based meat can help reduce the environmental impact of feeding the world's rapidly growing population. "We have to figure out a way to get the animal out of the process and continue to provide meat to people in a way that's more sustainable," he says.
is a 1984 action-adventure game that popularised isometric graphics in video games. It was developed and published for the ZX Spectrum by Ultimate Play the Game and written by Chris and Tim Stamper (pictured). Each monochrome castle room consists of blocks to climb, obstacles to avoid, and puzzles to solve. The game's novel image masking technique, Filmation, let images appear to pass atop and behind each other without distortion. By delaying the release until 1984, Ultimate was able to release several titles quickly before other developers could copy the style. Critics considered its technical solutions and isometric 3D style a harbinger of future game design. They praised the game's controls and atmosphere of mystery, but noted its difficult gameplay and criticised its sound and occasional graphical slowdown. It was named game of the year by the Golden Joystick Awards and Popular Computing Weekly readers. A terrestrial planet, Mars has a thin atmosphere and surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts and polar ice caps of the Earth. The planet has the highest mountain in the Solar System, Olympus Mons, as well as the largest canyon, Valles Marineris. Mars's rotation period and seasonal cycles are also similar to those of the Earth. Though it was not the first isometric 3D video game, Knight Lore popularised the format; its influence also persisted in computer role-playing games. The game was later included in Rare's 2015 Xbox One retrospective compilation, Rare Replay. Though it was not the first isometric 3D video game, Knight Lore popularised the format; its influence also persisted in computer role-playing games. The game was later included in Rare's 2015 Xbox One retrospective compilation, Rare Replay. Though it was not the first isometric 3D video game, Knight Lore popularised the format; its influence also persisted in computer role-playing games. The game was later included in Rare's 2015 Xbox One retrospective compilation, Rare Replay. The planet is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. Of all the planets in the Solar System other than Earth, Mars is the most likely to harbour liquid water and perhaps life. There are ongoing investigations assessing Mars's past potential for habitability, as well as the possibility of extant life. Future astrobiology missions are planned, including NASA's Mars 2020 rover and the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Rosalind Franklin rover. In November 2016, NASA reported finding a large amount of underground ice in the Utopia Planitia region of the planet. The volume of water detected has been estimated to be equivalent to the volume of water in Lake Superior. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are small and irregularly shaped. This picture is a true-colour image of Mars, taken from a distance of about 240,000 kilometres (150,000 mi) by the OSIRIS instrument on ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, during its February 2007 flyby of the planet.
