Lyrical Analysis: Pathos

Daydreaming is full of emotional, and vivid language. One very prominent example of this that stood out to me is the backwards and distorted playing of Thom Yorke saying "Half my life", which is played at the end of the track. It almost sounds like someone wheezing and gasping for air which is a very emotional element to the end of the song. There is also a very somber tone that the instrumentals add to the song. An inference that can be made throughout the song is that "daydreamers" or "dreamers" are going through life unfocused. They are referenced as dreamers at the beginning of the track. They are not living in the present; they are always dreaming. And a parallel can be drawn to Yorke's own life where he divorced his wife. It could be said that he was "daydreaming" while he was with her. There is a lot emotion in the song when Yorke talks about daydreamers, which it it said that "they never learn" and that they go to "the point of no return; then it's too late; the damage is done". It is tough living life in a constant state of anxiety and trapping yourself in your own mind.

Lyrical Analysis: Ethos

Daydreaming has lots of imagery and perspectives. One of the main perspectives is Thom Yorke's himself. Thom is speaking from his perspectives, showing that he was also once a daydreamer, which makes his insights more convincing. In the middle of the song, Yorke sings "We are, just happy to serve, just happy to serve, you", which seems to be referring to him being happy to help people that have anxiety. It can be interpreted other ways as well, but this is the most common and straightforward interpretation. Adding to this are his experiences, such as divorcing his wife which is something that is referred to in the "wheezing" sounding backward-played voice saying "Half my life" at the end of the track. The reason he says "Half my life" is because he was with his wife for half of his life. This makes his argument about daydreamers "never learning" even more convincing. It also shows more of how "the damage is done", how he spent so much time with her, only to separate.

Introduction: SOAPS

Subject: The subject of the song is secluding yourself from society, giving up fighting for your ideas and never living in the present (what is referred to as "daydreaming").
Occasion: Thom Yorke's thoughts are narrated as of his life up to 2016. In the video, Thom wanders through various locations including a library, an empty parking garage, a family's home, and a cave.
Audience: Thom seems to be talking in 3rd person omniscient perspective throughout the course of the song, using vague pronouns that are hard to pinpoint his perspective. When Yorke says: "We are just happy to serve just happy to serve you", this to me shows that the audience is Radiohead fans and those struggling with anxieties.
Purpose: One of the purposes of the song is for Thom to reflect on his life so far, and recognizing that he wasn't living his ideal life, yet daydreaming through much of it. This could be why he was with his wife for so long; he wasn't living in the present enough to realize that it wasn't meant to be. The song also has another purpose that is to relate to and help fans going through similar problems. The song is speaking to those who are not living in the present and are wasting away.
Speaker: The speaker in this song is Thom's conscious or a voice inside of his head that reflects on and overlooks others.
Tone: The tone of the song is melancholic, ambient, and somber. The atitude of the speaker is hurt, disconnected and reflective.

Thom Yorke and Radiohead made a brilliant song about "daydreaming" or hiding from your problems. Thom Yorke makes many parallels to his own life using Pathos and Logos in the video and Ethos and Pathos in the lyrics. The song, directed towards people struggling with anxieties and life's problems, aims to show them that it is worth it to pursue and keep going in life, rather than hiding from the bad things.
