One aspect of Latinx culture in the U.S. is the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. I actually did not know this existed until I saw it in the video for this class. According to the official website of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, it’s been going on for 66 years and takes place from 44th Street to 79th Street and also Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The parade this year will be taking place on Sunday, June 11th. I think that it is really great that people are able to embrace their culture and where they came from and also show other people who are outside their culture. It gives a sense of pride about where you came from. Their website also says that they are the largest demonstration of cultural pride in the nation and their parade is to honor the over 5 million Puerto Ricans residing in the United States.

Natalia Romero

Source:

https://www.nprdpinc.org/about

The U.S. has been greatly influenced by the food introduced by the Latinx community. Many dishes and ingredients common in Latinx food have become a staple within the U.S. Through food trucks, restaurants, and global supermarkets, the availability of Latinx foods is vast as well as affordable. According to aldíanews.com, Latin American food is the third most popular menu type in the U.S. A common example of a Latin American dish is avocado toast which has been eaten in Latin American countries for centuries but recently gained popularity in the United States and can now be found on many brunch menus. Other dishes that are easy to duplicate, such as tacos, salsa, arroz con pollo, and chimichurri sauce, while usually not considered to be authentic here in the United States, can often be seen in the diets of many Americans in the U.S.

Nyah Riffe

Sources:

https://www.nj.com/news/2022/10/for-decades-latin-culture-has-influenced-american-food-ways-and-drink.html

https://aldianews.com/en/culture/heritage-and-history/top-us-latam-foods

The United States has been widely influenced by Latinx culture. One aspect is music. There are plenty of popular artists that have Latinx roots and share their experiences through their music. Examples including Pitbull, Shakira, and Bad Bunny have all been on the top charts, and their music is enjoyed especially by those in the young adult category. What started as just Spanish songs on the radio or found in only certain communities many years ago, is now very influential in even American music. Genres of pop, hip-hop, and jazz are all widely different and enhanced due to Latinx artists as well as instrumental. Today as festivals, parties, and even backyard barbeques all enjoy the tunes influenced, written, and performed by the Latinx culture where all other cultures can enjoy it. One final example is a super bowl performance featuring Shakira and Jennifer Lopez where the audience really went wild. Overall, music in this country has come a far and influential way due to all the other cultures that have contributed.

Victoria Quinn
Source: https://theplaidpress.com/2021/09/28/the-influence-of-hispanic-music-in-american-culture/

Hispanic heritage month is one aspect of Latinx culture in the United States. It began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Lydon B Johnson until President Regan extended it to a month in 1988. Since then, it has been observed from September 15 to October 15 to recognize the cultures and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities in America. This 30-day period is significant because it coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, which all fall on September 15. It is celebrated with festivals, concerts, dances, art shows, museum exhibits, conferences, etc. Despite its 35-year history, I was unaware of this celebration until I watched the textbook videos. However, with such a large population residing in the United States, I think it is great that people are still fully embracing their cultures outside their country of origin.

Emily Hastings

Sources:
https://sites.ed.gov/hispanic-initiative/national-hispanic-heritage-month/

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/what-is-hispanic-heritage-month-and-why-is-it-celebrated/3867151/

Some interesting facts about the Latinx population here in the US, In 2010, the Hispanic population in the United States was the world's largest outside of Mexico, which has a population of 112 million. Mexican Americans are the largest Latino community in the United States, accounting for 63% of all Hispanics in the country. Following them are Puerto Ricans (9.2% of the Hispanic population) and Cubans (3.5% of the Hispanic population). I find this interesting because I didn't really realize that the US would have the second largest Hispanic population outside of Mexico. In light of this, Hispanics have surpassed all other groups in size in California and Texas. This, in my opinion, is a result of its proximity to Spanish-speaking nations in Central and South America.
- Jaylin Alston
Sources:
https://www.thoughtco.com/hispanic-american-population-facts-and-figures-2834946
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/09/23/key-facts-about-u-s-latinos-for-national-hispanic-heritage-month/

What has become a part of the Latinx culture in the US is Hispanic history month. Though I can’t speak the language learning about my culture and heritage is incredibly important to me and this month show cases the importance and the cultural influence it has had in the US. “	The timing of Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American nations. September 15 was chosen as the kickoff because it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of five “Central American neighbors,” as Johnson called them—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Those five nations declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821” The rich culture of Latin American history has been celebrated since 1968 and states all over US celebrate it in some way and here in Virginia you can travel to Washington DC and partake in the tons of festivals and activities on Hispanic history month.Citation Hispanic Heritage Month - Origins & Facts - History. https://www.history.com/topics/hispanic-history/hispanic-heritage-month.

The Latin community has reached 60.5 million in the US. Latinos are largely located in Texas and California. Latin culture began with the idea of spreading Christianity. Currently, American Hispanics are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and that will last until October 15- an annual event. Hispanic Heritage Month is a traditional celebration of the culture of Hispanics whose ancestors hailed from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America. An interesting fact is that pinatas- that are an icon at parties and a staple of Hispanic culture, originally represented Satan. The tradition of blindfolding players symbolizes absolute faith in God and the virtue he taught us. From these articles, I have learned so much about the history and the origin of the traditions in Latin culture. One of these ways is seen in the rapid rise in popularity of and introduction of new or modified Latin foods. The Latinx community is a group term used to describe those with Latin roots, usually in reference to those with that come from or have family from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, or other similar regions. The varying unique flavors from these different places have found a home in the United States, where these different cultures come together to try each others cuisine and create new recipes, leading to new innovations in food. Some popular dishes include Aerpa (from Colombia and Venezuela), Pão de Queijo (from Brazil), Tamales (from Central/South America), Patacones (from Columbia), Tacos (traditional Mexican dish), Empanadas (common in South America), and Churros.
-Daniel Hostetler
Sources:
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/09/23/key-facts-about-u-s-latinos-for-national-hispanic-heritage-month/
https://journal.bspokestudios.com/2021/09/30/exploring-latinx-food-cuisine/

In the United States alone population had increased and reached 62.5 Million in 2021, compared to 2010, when the population overall increased by more than 19%. Hispanics play a massive role in the U.S. population growth. This population has derived from many countries, such as Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Guatemala.

There is also a celebration known as Hispanic Heritage month on September 15th because it celebrates independence day in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. And other countries, Mexico and Chile, on September 16th and 18th. Learning about the origins of independence day and what countries celebrate is fascinating. This is important and should always be a grand celebration where these countries fought for independence. However, it is also essential that we preserve culture. Therefore, it is always necessary to encourage smaller groups to express diversity in the roots of Hispanic culture: the language, art, dance, culture, and fantastic food.

According to New Research Economy, Hispanic and Latin(o)(a)(x) households have earned over $1 trillion dollars in 2017. Knowing this, that has been able to help pay for approximately $250.2 billion in taxes. Why is this important. The workforce consists of hispanics and latinos and they are known to be the hardest workers in the country. With a growing population, these numbers have most likely grown. Their earning and consumer power is high meaning after taxes, the household would carry about $780 billion in spending money. Also, with an established work ethic, his panics and latinos are more likely to become entrepreneurs which would make them the minority group with the highest amount of income and businesses.
- Asia Tonia
https://research.newamericaneconomy.org/report/hispanic-americans-2019/
