3. Place the patient in a sitting or a high Fowler’s position; place towel across chest.
4. Remove dentures; place emesis basin and tissues within patient’s reach
5. Inspect the tube for any defects like holes or rough edges
6. Determine the length of tube needed to reach the stomach
7. Have patient blow nose to clear nostrils
8. Wash hands and put on disposable gloves
9. Measure the patient’s NEX (nose, earlobe, xiphoid) and mark the tube appropriately
