What Is Cultural Heritage?

How do you think cultural heritage can be best preserved?

Cultural heritage is a set of values, objects, ideas and places. They have their origin in the past and influence the citizens who live in a deteminated place. We are what we are because of the context that surrounds us. The best way to preserve cultural heritage is through education. It is important that our students know all the cultural heritage that surrounds them so that they feel part of it. In addition, in a globalized world, we must look beyond and know the cultural heritage of other countries to understand and value it.

There are a lot of resources (texts, images, painting, photos...) that could be used in the school as tool in order to bring near the students to our cultural heritage. It could be use in my lessons with the smallest children in the school. For example, in my school there are art sessions in Pre-Primary classrooms and students can learn some famous paintings and their painters.

I have worked in different schools that use this methodology. Children learn a lot of things with projects and it is very motivating for them. For example, I worked a project about olympic games with 4 years children when the last olympic games was celebrated. They watched some videos and photos about it, we played different sports, we learnt about the olympic rings... I didn´t Know Europeana, otherwise I could have used it. I will try to use it in my next projects with small children.
