Bruno throughout the story was very mad at his family for moving to Out-With, or Auschwitz. Bruno said, "Coming to a place like this. Don't you think we've made a big mistake?" (17). Bruno was very disappointed that he moved to a smaller house and that he moved to somewhere where he had no friends. Bruno was very spoiled and he was so used to his huge house in Berlin.

One external conflict that Bruno has is with his sister, Gretel. Gretel and Bruno would constantly get into fights about various topics. Such as, dolls, friends, and living situation. Bruno would also call Gretel a, "Hopeless case."

Bruno had an external conflict with Lieutenant Kotler. Lieutenant Kotler always called Bruno "little man" and Bruno absolutely hated it. Lieutenant Kotler did a lot of bad things like being mean to Shmuel, having an affair with Bruno's mother, killing Jews, and flirts with Gretel. Pg 162 " He saw a dog approach the fence and start barking and Lieutenant Kotler went up to the dog and shot it.

One internal conflict that Bruno had with himself was the new environment. When Bruno first went to his new house he thought he couldn't have fun because there was only three floors. Also, he didn't have any friends to pay with. However, this later changed when Bruno met Shmuel. On page 16, Bruno says, "This isn't home and it never will be."

Although Bruno didn't know he had an external conflict with Shmuel but as a reader, we knew. Bruno thought that Shmuel was his best friend but little did he know he was slowly killing him. At Out-With, the prisoners don't get much food so when Bruno brought food and on his walk, he got hungry that food would have been used to feed Shmuel. I can assume that Shmuel was very upset when he only got a crumb or two to eat when he could have had a whole piece of chocolate cake. Pg 167 " Our hands, They're so different. Look!".

The rain was a terrible conflict for Bruno, this prevented him from seeing Smuel. Smuel was one of Bruno's new "friends". Bruno said, "I was not able to see Smuel because of the rain." Auschwitz is outside and so is Smuel, so because of the rain Bruno was not able to see him.
