Personnel Indifference - Parliament

On a personal scale, I am indifferent towards the voting of the Canadian parliament. In my opinion, many politicians are corrupt, leading to my distancing of the political process, although I am unable to vote. Further meaning that in many cases the system is not entirely worth total participation.

I am personally indifferent towards tariffs discussed between the USA and Canada. The current Canadian economy is so unstable that even such a large difference does not hold the same significance as it should.

On a local scale, Barrie struggles with a high percentage of drug abuse. In Barrie, the simplicity of accessing drugs shows a lack of care or funding within police departments. This is typically overlooked even though this issue commonly results in death with in one occurrence, 9 people passing within the span of a week.

Local Indifference - Homelessness

In Barrie, there is a lack of empathy for the homeless, which counts as a local indifference. This has led to a large quantity of homeless encampments which can disturb the general populace of Barrie. Although the number is not exact and could very likely be higher, many sources suggest that the number of registered homeless people in Barrie was at approximately 650 as of 2024. Out of this, 12 percent are under the age of 16. Without action, many facing this challenge could end up in a shelter, jail, correctional institution, or hospital. These services cost taxpayers more money, which overall takes away from other services needing funding. If Barrie citizens were more empathetic at helping the homeless problem, it would cost fewer tax dollars and take people off the streets.

Global Indifference - Global Conflict

Global conflict is a great example of global indifference. This shows a cultural divide between countries. For example, the Israeli and Palestinian war shows a cultural and religious divide, describing the importance of compromise. This war shows the indifference of a corrupt government taking land that does not belong to them, showing needed respect for historic and cultural borders.

Global Indifference - Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is one of the largest industries, which produces 9 percent of CO2 emissions, contributing to global warming, yet it is not an issue most would think about. This shows the levels of separation between the end consumer and the process of the product being made. Sweatshops are factories mass producing these goods. Many sweatshop workers face inhumane conditions with little wages. For example, the Rana Plaza factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, collapsed due to structural failure. This was home for five clothing factories. The lack of care causing the collapse killed 1100 people, many of whom were workers.

How to Solve Indifference and Encourage People to use their Voices

To solve indifference, society as a whole needs to strengthen the ability to feel empathy for others and have a broader sense of global knowledge. For many, they lack the confidence to stand against others' opinions, and if an individual has the bravery to speak out against injustice, others will likely follow and speak their mind. This feeds into peer pressure as a whole, which is an issue many people need to learn to overcome in order to feel confidence in themselves and their ideas.
