The launching of Sputnik by the Soviet Union was a major shock for the United States as they hoped they would have been the first, but this didn’t make the United States back down. Instead, they feared that they were falling behind the Soviets and the US pushed for more space and weapon programs to be created.

They were both eager to earn power and influence over the world and the Space Race was one of the best ways to do so.
Another way it created competition was because of Sputnik being launched and causing great fear and pressure among the US. The US wanted to catch up and surpass the Soviet Union through the scientific developments, such as sending a man to the moon.
The last way competition was created was by showing the world which country was smarter and more technologically advanced. Space was a very far dream and achieving it  would create great fame for either the US or the USSR.

This is because there is a large competition between securing this great power and influence over the world, and their was just as much pressure for power/influence during the Cold War to get into space.
There is also a current competition between the US and China for which country has the greatest technology market, just like how the US and USSR competed over who had the strongest technology in space during the cold war. AI is one of these technologies that are creating a scientific competition between countries today.
The last comparison is NASA's purpose in the past and in the present.
