Because the writer used first person point of view and the main character narrates the whole story, I try to read the story with a crazy murderer kind of voice. After a few minutes reading the story, I got exhausted reading the story with that voice and continue to read it silently. (Of course, I was the only person in my room) And I have to say, I am really impressed how actually Poe can write this well because before this I never heard his name. Thus, I think he is just as good as J.K Rowling or J. R. R. Tolkien but no! Edgar Allan Poe is one of the greatest authors and his writing is just unbelievable. I have read novels and short stories with the similar genre to this story by both English and Malay writers, but I never, haven't read this kind of story. The way his choice of words created vivid images in my mind, the way he used ironies to emphasize the fact that the character is mentally unstable, made me feel impressed with how much effort Poe put to finish this masterpiece. In my opinion, you will never find something written like this and the fact that it's written in the 18th century proved that Edgar Allan Poe is more than capable to deliver his message indirectly to his society. The thing that I cannot fathom is the complexity of in his writing in which the story can be interpreted in many ways and actually, only Poe knew what actually happened in the story. This mixed feeling of mystery and suspense is the essence in making the readers anticipate more and will finish reading Poe's writing. Hence, from the discussion in my Language & Literature Appreciation class, I learned more about how poetic devices and writing techniques used superbly in describing the events in literature.
