A study conducted by McCabe. (n.d.) Op art, short for 'optical art,' started in the 1960s. It uses shapes, colors, and patterns to make pictures that seem to move or blur. This kind of art plays tricks on your eyes and brain, making still images appear as if they are moving. Important artists in this style include Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, and Jesus Rafael Soto. Vasarely was one of the first to create op art, and Soto added moving parts to his pieces, linking op art to kinetic art, which literally moves. The term 'Op Art' was first used by Time magazine in 1964 to describe art that creates optical illusions. A famous exhibition in New York in 1965 called "The Responsive Eye" made op art popular. This style works by confusing our eyes and brain, using special patterns and colors that make us see movement in pictures that are actually still. (Google Arts & Culture, n.d.). The connection with science is pretty obvious as the art style relates to optical illusions that trick the brain.
