This quote from page 143 proves that she doesn’t agree with the ways things are supposed to be. She doesn’t want to follow the rules, because she doesn’t agree. Marji is choosing to be independent and rebel against the law, although she knows there could be consequences that follow along with this decision.

“After a little while, no one took the torture sessions seriously anymore. As for me I immediately started making fun of them” (Marjane Satrapi page 97). In this quote, Marji is showing that she got others to follow along with her decision to make fun and rebel against the teacher . Even though they knew there were consequences her and her friends didn’t care, because they didn’t want to have to follow these rules that they didn’t agree with.

Does she have the courage to stand up? If not, you’ll all be punished! Well? Who was it??!!!? Marji: We were completely united. Teacher: You’re all suspended for a week!” (Marjane Satrapi page 97). This quote shows that although they all chose to not answer and be united, they still got suspended and punished for acting that way.

“Mom: This time I covered you, but it’s the last time! Now is the time for learning you have your whole life to have fun! What are you going to be when you grow up?? In this country, you have to know everything better than anyone else if you're going to survive!!” (Marjane Satrapi page 113). Marji’s mother is speaking to her in this. She is telling Marji that the way she acts has consequences and if she continues to act this way in their country. She is teaching Marji that it isn’t safe for her to do this. Acting up isn’t safe, because it is against the rules in their country to say and do the things that she does.

Teacher: SATRAPI YOU'RE EXPELLED!"(Marjane Satrapi page 143). This shows that in the end Marji’s choices and the way that she rebelled got her opinion out, but it also caused her to have to leave. She may have her way of doing things, but it caused her to have consequences which in this case was her having to leave because she was expelled.

The book Persepolis is from the viewpoint of a child, Marji. Marji is a rebellious girl who tells her story from the Islamic Revolution. She goes back and forth from the present to the past, and she shows some of the memories she has from the revolution. Marji lives in an upper-class family, so she has a very different and privileged life compared to others living in the country at the time. In the book, you only see the perspective of one person so you can only understand her perspective. If the book was written by someone else who maybe was in a lower-class, older or even a male the story would have been completely different.

The author organized the book as a graphic novel. The images she put in it help tell the story of this book. It helps explain what is going on. The author’s organization makes an impact on the book because if she hadn’t put things out of order the book wouldn’t have been as impactful. She put things somewhat out of order so that she could tell more of her story. Sometimes the author would go from present to past. She would show memories she had and some of the things she had thought about to help enhance the story.

It helped show that she wasn’t like everyone else because as a child growing up her family wasn’t very religious, but she still would choose to believe in a religion. It helped that the book was a graphic novel because you could see who and what she thought God looked like.

“For days and days I walked through the falling snow, I crossed the Alborz Mountains to find refuge at my parents’ house in Astara.” (Marjane Satrapi page 56) This quote is in the middle of one of Marjane’s uncle Anoosh’s stories. The story wouldn’t have made as much sense if the book hadn’t have been a graphic novel. His story is illustrated, so you can understand and see what is happening in his story rather than having to infer what is going on and what it looks like.

You showed your opposition to the regime by letting a few strands of hair show.” (Marjane Satrapi page 75). This quote shows that this book is needed as a graphic novel because you wouldn’t be able to tell what these people look like without the images. If the book wasn’t a graphic novel you would have to assume what the different veils look like. Because the book is a graphic novel, the images help enhance the story. It helps explain what is going on and what it looks like.

A real-world example of this would be, the Gilets Juanes. This is the yellow vest protest going on in France right now. The protest began with tens of thousands of people protesting against rising fuel prices. After the government got rid of the idea to raise the prices people started protesting for other reasons. They wanted redistribution of wealth, an increase in salary, pensions, social security payments, and the minimum wage. Some people even want the president to resign. Since the government is not planning on following through with many of the protestors ideas they have to come up with a way to control the chaos. The government as of December 2nd, 2018 according to thegaurdian.com over 250 people were arrested and, 100 injured. Some protesters are in serious condition due to the violence at some of the demonstrations. This real-world example is very similar to Persepolis, because there was a lot of violence involved in these demonstrations as well as in the ones in Persepolis. The rebellion in both the book and these protests caused there to be consequences such as, arrests and injuries. In the previously and recently, there are many real-world examples of how rebellion and independence can end up with many consequences.
