In the case of the latter, resilience would be most simply defined as showing determination, tenacity and perseverance in your actions and you endeavours. A resilient person does not give up when things are difficult or if one fails at a task, one should reflect, adapt and attempt again.

In the case of the former, a resilient theory is one that stands up to scrutiny, has explored all possible avenues at each point and so therefore adopts the most effective method and with each attempt to disprove or supersede it, the theory grows stronger. An example of a resilient theory is the theory of evolution, which endures as accepted fact in science.

• A goal that you think is achievable but you have no desire to achieve it.

• A goal that you think is unachievable but you have a strong desire to achieve it. 

Within these two scenarios lies motivation in that I suppose all things are somewhere within the poles of desirability and achievability. 

My examples are:

• I could be a school teacher. I've spent enough time in schools delivering workshops to know that I am capable of this and I often get asked by teachers in schools if I am a teacher. I have no desire to be a teacher, whatsoever

• I would dearly love to have a successful podcast as my main source of income and output. I have wanted to do this for a very long time and never been able to apply the proper time effort and creativity needed to successfully do so. It has felt unachievable for a very long time.

Two things that are fundamentally true about me.

1 I love music and always have. I can’t remember not being around music. It is an integral part of my life.

2 I have a compulsion to share the music I love with others. I’ve done this throughout my career in DJing, festival management and radio presenting.

What I want to do now, is tell the stories behind the music and the stories behind other’s love of music.


Because I’ve realised that when you know the stories, even the dark secrets and the struggles behind the music.

The love for it can be elevated even further.

I’m a couple of hours in Rich Dad Poor Dad - enjoying it. I thought at first it was some mad capitalist bible, but it’s very clever.

He was really unapologetic in telling me his company turnover and its projections.

I think in the past I would have found this a little vulgar but my current mindset helped me to see the genuine pride he felt that his hard work was paying off after five years.

It was a lovely thing in a way, it showed a healthy relationship with money that he could boast his headline figures and not feel like he was bragging.

I celebrate him.

In my feedback for Your Niche, I was showing too much opinion and therefore bias.

I need to revisit my Primary Research and view it with less confirmation of my own agenda.

I also seem to be separating Art from Education by a desire to create something that is separate from my day to day life. Having received even more outstanding feedback lately for my work as a tutor, I should acknowledge that education is something I do well and that incorporating this into my work in podcasting can only be a positive step. It's a strength I need to lean into not away from.

Is this by making a separate educational podcast? My Your Niche feedback suggested that having more than one project might be the way forwards and this also speaks towards creating a portfolio of assets (Commercial Motivation).

Could I incorporate an educational focus into my existing project?

I think both are valid and realistic.

In terms of breaking the bias, and referring back again to my Your Niche feedback, perhaps one of my points of secondary research should be into audience/consumer behaviour in media. It fits with my chosen development focus of marketing strategy, and got a positive response in the seminar when I came up with it.

So, lean into my educational skillset and research audience/consumer behaviour in media to help me better understand the listener needs, see how this compares to my primary research data and identify interviewee's with experience in this field.

I have nudged my contact regarding my potential mentor at Persephonica, but it may be time to seek a new mentor over the Development Week. Even if I get a positive response after I've sought a new candidate, I can use the former as a point of primary research instead, if they are willing.

  • Give the guests the assets to promote the show effectively 

  • Work with other creators in your niche. 

  • Be open to barter economy, collaboration and favour.

  • Discovery will be key to the first project.

  • Having a low risk ancillary concept accompanying the flagship project will add to the discoverability overall. 

  • Even though your podcast is about music, it is not really about music. It is about the person. You want to get the great stories from the guest. Will they go where they haven’t gone before?

  • Thinking of the fans when choosing guests, how will they cross-promote? How will you bring them in?

  • Viral moments through visual clips.

  • If you must record with Zoom you can still dress this up with graphics, so it’s not just a Zoom call, it’s part of your world. 

  • More people are discovering new podcasts on YouTube than anywhere else. 

  • Look at what your competition are doing on YouTube (Colin and Sameer)

  • Aim for a deliverable amount of promo for each episode (clips, viral things)

  • The hardest things to do is celebrity booking - getting them to commit 

  • Make a Wishlist of guests 

  • Biggest possible splash for launch.

  • What is your route to 20,000 regular listeners? Once you have that level of listenership, you can start to make a living. 

  • Get good at podcasting skills in general to create income in the right world and increase networking. 

  • Even if the work is not in your chosen field, the learning process will be useful.

  • Pilot as much as possible, never under pilot, work with friends and make mistakes. Half of piloting is the technical part. Does the length work, what questions work? 

  • The best podcast in the world won’t have sounded like it for the first five pilots. 

  • Get people who don’t really care about podcasts or the culture to listen to the pilots. Get you thinking outside the box. 

  • Get to a point where you can say “Can I make three in three weeks.?”

  • Always have a couple in the bag, never let it get below two in the bag (contingency) 

  • Even put a pilot out if you think it’s good enough (contingency)

  • Be robust in accepting criticism and do not take it personally. 

  • Take the criticism in a constructive way but be bold enough to persevere if you think it’s a good idea. 

  • “It’s a good idea”

  • Rights? (Quoted Rory “how important is it?”) - agrees it’s not that important.

  • Don’t show the focus group the one with music. If they say it’s much better with music and you can’t make it happen. 

  • Focus Groups don’t solve everything.

  • Don’t undersell you branding. Shout louder than you think you need to.

  • In every city there’s a thriving scene of creatives doing podcasting. 

  • Podcasting is probably still going to grow in the next 5-10 years. It’s still a small share of the overall audio market. 

  • Podcasting wasn’t a legitimate career a few years ago, it really is now.

  • Get your strategy right get your niche right, find an audience, good entertaining thing, there’s still a route and drawbridge isn’t up yet.

I did send the usual requests for the record (see diary entry ‘Recording Info For Guests’) but he is a busy man so had come into the record unprepared. Compared to the pilot with Martin Tibbetts (recorded on his phone in a car during a thunderstorm, while I was inside a homemade tent to try and prevent the reverb in my Air BnB) however, these recording conditions were great.

I must be prepared for these sorts of conditions and the best way to preserve as much of the conversation by listening more than I speak and knowing when to interject.
