I think the story criticises the way a lot of traditions are mindlessly followed in our society. We may not think of them as traditions or be as vocally passionate about following them, but there are so many things we do simply because everyone else does it and it has been done for a long time, and we don't stop to question it's reason or outcome.

I also think it criticises the way we turn on each other so easily. When the story starts, everyone seems to get along with each other, but we slowly start to see them turn on one another. First families turn on other families, then households turn on each other, and then even couples turn on each other and children turn on their parents. Instead of fighting each other, the villagers could've fought the tradition together and stopped it.

Done

Like how we used to think that white people were better than any other colour of skin. And how some traditions need to be questioned. Also, people in minorities try to speak out about things but people don't listen. And how the "norm" for things we do are questionable.

Done

I think The Lottery may be criticizing how we are so quick to sacrifice lives for a 'greater cause' such as war (because this was written soon after ww2 it could be relevant to the story). When conflict arises between nations sometimes we start wars and don't think of the lives that will be lost and instead think of it as a 'noble' sacrifice. This is not worth the loss of lives in my opinion. This relates to the story because the towns-people are sacrificing their own friends and families lives just for good crops, which may be seen as a good cause for them and shows why many of them don't second guess this act. Similar to war. We are following tradition.
Done

I think that the story is criticising how we as humans continue to follow traditions and habits even if we can see the outcomes of them being potentially harmful as long as they aren't directly harming us or putting us in severe danger. This is shown by the progression of how the people question the tradition as they see the likely hood of being affected by the tradition increase. Mrs Hutchinson is first shown questioning the tradition when she finds out that her family was going to be affected, and when she realises that she is the one who is going to be stoned to death. This is interesting as it shows how the rest of the characters feel forced to comply with the tradition even if they directly see it affecting a person as they fear it could end up putting them in danger.

-Done
