A government where the people had control had not worked before the United States. We look at these founding fathers as gods, but in reality they were just dudes. The Articles of Confederation were originally called a League of Friendship. The states were almost like sovereign nations. The government was broke. Every state printed their own money, there was no federal currency. Shays' rebellion showed us how weak our government was, and it was pretty much chaos.

Virginia thinks that they should throw out the AOC, and they want to make a new Constitution. 3 branches work together, no one has too much power. They almost did not trust themselves with power. They made the electoral college to choose the president. The smaller states were very mad because they did not have as much power, this is because of their smaller population.2 houses in 1 congress. Bicameral. Each state had 2 representatives in the senate. Slaves were counted as 3/5ths of a person. Great compromise combined Virginia and New Jersey plan to make Connecticut plan.

Ben Franklin only thought the constitution would last for 10 years. The national government had no money or power under the Articles of Confederation. Shay's rebellion showed that the federal government had no power. They had no authority to be doing the convention because it went against the Articles of Confederation. They decided to forget the Articles of Confederation and they started new. The nationalists and federalists compromised on a two house congress. The house would have representatives based on population. The senate had equal representation.
