The Rise of Actor Managers - 1700's - 1800's

The first time that stage management was really recognised was in the form of actor managers. Actor Managers were actors who would also manage the show. They would be in charge of making the show run smoothly as well as giving a great performance. Actor managers were often the lead in the play as it was seen that they could handle more responsibility.

Some famous examples include William Charles Macready and Sir Henry Irving.

This all changed when special effects began to become more elaborate and dangerous which meant that they needed someone there to make sure that everything was working properly and that no one was in danger. This is when it was decided that it was properly best to hand the resonsibilities to a third party. This is the immergence of stage management.

On 16th of February 1920, Stage management was officially recognised by the actors Equity Association.

This is important as now Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers were recognised as being actual roles in a theatre and this meant that they were able to have access to more rights. Such as the ability to be apart of other associations and unions.

COVID-19 and it's effects on Stage Management - 2020

COVID-19 is a virus that was first discovered in 2019 and has become a global pandemic. This meant that many theatres had to close their doors for a while. When they opened up again things were now very different as safety was of an even bigger concern.

Now alongside their other duties, stage managers may need to do things like making sure that they know when someone is self-isolating and who they have been in contact with. This is to make sure that all of the actors and crew are safe. They will also need to schedule online meets and rehearsals when possible so as to limit the chance of the cast and crew catching COVID-19.

The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 was put into place as a way to circumvent the rising amount of deaths and injuries that were happening in working environments.

The act meant that health and safety was something that the employer needed to look after and not the employee.

This is important to Stage Management as this meant that Stage Managers were often put partially in charge of health and safety of the crew.

This was introduced so as to make people feel safer working and also to have the workers have a say in what health and safety was like in their field. People were beginning to recognise that it made sense to consult people who were in the same area as to what would should be introduced in their sector in terms of health and safety.

Stage managers were now able to have a say in what legislation was made and how to better make sure that working in the theatre was as safe as possible.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 meant that risk assessments had to be done to see how dangerous a situation was and therefore if it should go ahead and what things could be done to circumvent it. This is important to stage management as stage managers are often put in charge of things like risk assessments and making sure that all the company are safe while working.

COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.

It was already being formulated due to the Health and Safety at Work act of 1974 as people were already beginning to notice that more work needed to be done towards health and safety.

In 1988 the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations came into being. It was introduced as another way to make sure that people were safe, making sure that people were working with hazardous substances safely and that employers knew how to deal with any accidents.

At first COSHH didn't cover things such as moulds, viruses and bacteria but over time there has been a few changes and alterations.

As of 2020, COSHH covers things such as Dust, Fumes, Chemicals, Gases and any biological agents that are toxic.
