Christopher Columbus was most definitely a villain. Although a lot of the mistakes made by Columbus are natural things that would have happened anyways he did ruin a lot for the natives. According to the article in "the truth about Christopher Columbus" written by Christopher Minster the text states, ¨He was a slave trader who heartlessly took men and women away from their families in order to lesson his failure to find a new trade route"(Minster 16). In the end Columbus demonstrated many factors that leads us to believe he is in fact a villian.

I believe that Christopher Columbus was both a hero and a villain. He had many flaws, but he also changed the world. The articles prove that he was greedy and inexcusably terrible to the Native Americans who lived on the Caribbean islands that he settled, but he also changed the world’s view of our planet forever and discovered the beginning of something amazing--two new continents. While he ruthlessly killed and enslaved the native people, it was a very common and cruel practice at the time. While it is absolutely wrong by today’s standards, and I am disgusted by it, that was life back then. Finally, there is no way he could have known about or stopped the spread of diseases to the American peoples, because no one knew the expedition was bringing these illnesses to America--least of all Columbus.

I believe Christopher Columbus was both a hero and a villain. He was a hero because he took a chance at the unknown and sailed westward. In his time, most people only took known sea routes when travelling by boats. But, he is also a villain. His motives weren't for exploration, he wanted to become rich and would do anything for it. When his first journey seemed like a failure he took Tainos from their families to prove there was some worth in his expedition.

I believe that Christopher Columbus was both a hero and a villain. He was a hero because he sailed the big ocean and found some new land. He had no route to follow and just made decisions on his own about which direction to go. He also knew that there was a chance he could die but did it anyway. He is also a villain because once he found land me treated the natives badly. Because of this other sailors also treated them badly, because of what Christopher Columbus told about them. Overall he was both a hero and a villain. Haley Herbert

I think Columbus was both a hero and a villain. He was a hero to the Europeans, because he found new land, and new resources. As well as opening up a whole continent to them. He was a villain because he treated the native people horribly, and disrespected them in many ways. He enslaved the native peoples, and killed them without remorse. He also brought many diseases that the native peoples had not yet encountered, killing millions. He was unable to find a route to Asia he stole from the natives without compassion, or any thought of morals. He was a hero and a villain, because he opened up a whole new continent to the knowledge of the world, but treated the natives horribly. He was more villain then hero but still has both in him, nonetheless. Quartz Landaker

I believe that Christopher Columbus was both a hero and a villain. He was a hero to some by sailing around the sea and conquering land for America. He was also one of many of the firsts to do many things. Besides those few goods he had done, he is also a villain. Columbus had killed thousands of Native Americans, lead diseases to the Natives, wanted money only for himself, etc. I believe that he was more of a villain than a hero. Audrey Duran

He also opened travel to an entirely new continent to Europe. Christopher Columbus was a hero to Europeans. On the other hand he killed and enslaved many Natives to accomplish everything he did. Columbus had no mercy to the Native people, he also brought many diseases and sicknesses to the Natives causing more casualties You can view Columbus in two point of views because he did good for one side and did bad for another. -Keenan

Depending on where you lived during Christopher Columbus's expeditions, he was either a Hero or a Villain, but for certain a man who drastically changed history without any doubt. He obviously had power, greed, and ego problems which led him to kill many Taino Native Americans. However, this certainly was acceptable during the time period, even though he believed in Christianity, which contradicts his actions. But, he also discovered the America's, and without him finding this place first, we quite honestly might not be here today. Thus, if you are or were a Christian, or Native American, at the time, Columbus was the Devil, but if you were a scientist, shipman, or a modern day person (whether you like it or not) Columbus is a Protagonist.

In my personal opinion, background knowledge, and new facts from the articles, I think Christopher Columbus was an evil son of a dog. He thought by discovering new lands, he had the right to rape and pillage innocent Native lives. I can support my evidence by referencing to the article "The Truth About Christopher Columbus", if you look back to myth #3, he captured natives and made them slaves on their land. He was uneducated and couldn't find his way around a map, and "winged it." When he didn't get his way with the Native's he brutally killed them all, which like it or not is wrong for a man who aspires to be a "christian." Christopher did not discover the Americas, Amerigo Vespucci did, so in turn I don't think he should be celebrated for something he didn't do and how he "did it." To some back in that time and now, he may seem like a hero for finding land, when in reality he stole land and oppressed its people, claimed to think he was somewhere he was not, and was really an egotistical idiot.

I think that Columbus was both a hero and a villain for many reasons. He captured other natives to use as slaves as stated in myth #3. However, slavery was very lucrative at that time in Europe and not seen as 'bad'. Also, when he returned to Spain, he brought a lot of information about discovering the new world as stated in myth #4. Europeans didn't know anything about the New World, and he told King and Queen of Spain lots about it. He was then rewarded with seeing and discovering more of the New World four times. However, for something to be discovered, it must be first lost, and the native people in the Americas, weren't considered lost. In conclusion, Christopher Columbus was both a villain and a hero.
Adam Peisajovich

I think that Chrisopher Columbus is both a hero and a villain. It was very brave of him to set sail and to discover new land, but the things that he did while he was there, not so great. He brought religion to a place where it is now known for religious freedom. This means that he brought Christianity stating “No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Saviour, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service.” This allows us to be in the America that we are in now rather than ruled by a single religion. At the same time, he also enslaved natives and used them for profit. In my opinion, he has helped more than hurt, but he has also definitely done some wrong. Ayden Abeyta

I believe that Christopher Columbus was both a hero and a villain. Through his travels to find Asia and discovering the Americas instead; he opened up a new door for trade and allowed a spread for new ideas, opening of a country with freedom of religion, and a spread of goods. Without Columbus' voyage, we may not be where we are in our lives right now. Columbus is a villain though for his vile acts against Native Americans everywhere he went. He and his settlers slaughtered Native Americans, enslaved them for profit, and forced them to pay taxes. "The Natives were soon forced into slavery, and punished with the loss of a limb or death" (Article 1). The unfair treatment of the Taino by Columbus and his troops further allowed the inhumane abuse of Native Americans by other European Settlers. Columbus did some great things to get America off to a start, but he was an awful man that killed many.

Columbus was a hero in terms of discovering new lands and civilizing them. He “brought civilization to the American lands” (Crowder). He did things wrong such as treat native americans poorly but in terms of discovery he was a hero. People might have had ideas that the earth was flat but Columbus was the first to actually prove it. This helped revolutionize astrology and science around the world.

But if it was not him it would have most likely been another exploration. But overall the general outcome was positive. He was the first man to cross the Atlantic ocean. And many firsts, He had good intentions but followed through with bad outcomes which makes him both a hero and a villain.

Columbus was a villain and a hero to me because he ruined a lot for the natives but also did a lot for trade and allowed a spread for new ideas. If not for Columbus a lot of other countries would not know how to reach other lands. Columbus discovered new lands and civilized them.In a way Columbus was also a villain because he slaughtered native Americans, enslaved them for profit, lead diseases to the Native Americans, etc. So he was a hero by discovering and civilizing new land and opening America etc... But he was a villain also because he slaughtered Native Americans and what he did to them was wrong.

Columbus was both a hero and a villain/ Columbus was a talented sailor, navigator, and ship captain. He then went west without a map, and trusting his instincts with his calculations. However, during his fourth voyage, he and his men were stranded on Jamaica for about a year when his ships rotted. But he was also a cheapstake. Althought, he then refused to to pay up after promising to reward to whoever spotted land first on his 1492 voyage. Columbus refused to pay up to sailor Rodgrigo de Triana after the sailor spotted land first. Then Columbus gave himself the reward instead because he had seen a "glow" the night before.
-Catalina Estrada

Christopher Columbus, i believe, was a villain. I say this because he enslaved people, and natives. he was arrested, and had some mistakes. Although he had mistakes, him as a villain did some great things as well. Like constructed a deal with the Spanish, and voyaged the world. I would say he is both but if i say he is a villain this paragraph
will most likely be read and the audience will have a bias opinion.

To me i think Christopher Columbus is a villain. The reason i say this is because he did three things that were really bad. The first thing he did that was bad is that when he came to the new world he pretty much said this is all mine and took almost everything from them. The second thing was that when he came to this new place he killed a lot of the people there if they didn't do as he said so. The final thing is that him and his crew brought over so many diseases that killed alsmost their enter tribe whtch also spreaded to north america and killed more of the native americans there too.
By Jake Wood
