The panel is very dark, which symbolises Vladek's negative feelings. On the right, the light shines on Richieu, who is playing with a toy and is unaware of the dangers around him. This provides effective contrast with Vladek and Anja, whose bodies are completely dark. In this scene, Vladek pretends to be a Pole and convinces the train conductor to sneak him across the border. The way Spiegelman portrays this is particularly interesting. All Poles are portrayed as pigs in Maus, whereas Jews are portrayed as mice. By showing Vladek wearing a pig mask, Spiegelman effectively tells the audience what Vladek's intention is, and how convincing his act is. Not only this, but he's also breaking the law in order to get back to his family. I feel like Vladek is always trying to create  himself into strong and tough person kind of attitude. We can tell because in the first few characters he throw his sons jacket away and told him to wear his, if you only look at the surface you will probably think that he is just being weird or mean or anything but after you really think about this we can tell that he is just caring about his sons health because as a old age person he might think it’s too cold or is worried he will get sick. 
Also when he tells the story we can see that he is always trying to tell the story so its not too depress, and that made the pictures and the story not to be sad or depress at all but to be honest the real story is way more depressing and sad then what vladek told his son.
