I selected this moment because it is one of the very first scenes that the reader meets Vladek. This scene subverts our expectations of how a father might normally act (caring, loving) and instead shows how trauma has made Vladek cruel and brash at times. Since he has been through a war and seen the worst in humanity, Vladek knows that "no food" for "a week" could turn even the best of friends into vicious enemies. This extract paints Vladek as a complex character and also demonstrates the difficult, sometimes strained relationship, between Artie and Vladek - and how the war is now a barrier between the two men.

For my condition I must fight to save myself.

This quote spoken by Vladek in chapter 2 shows how the war has forced Vladek to be more individualist and how he no longer relies on the goodwill of society to support him. He has become cynical since he understands that the world truly is dog eat dog. This quote also shows that even though the war is still over, Vladek is still in survival mode, unable to relax.

The gigantic fluctuations of Vladek’s character make it easier to feel more emotion in compare with Artie’s normal life(not really that normal since he was mentally unstable and traumatized by the death of his mother). Vladek’s experience with war and the loss he’s been through forms an extremely strong bond with the BBQ reader, especially because of the ups and downs.

No, darling! To die it's easy... But you have to struggle for life! This was a quote from Vladek, as he was speaking to Anja, not long after war has begun. She was going through a series of depressing emotions that loses her passion and interest in life. At the meantime, Vladek was there to comfort her and explain to her how this whole chaos will soon be over, and life has many meaningful purposes awaiting for her. A deeper context of this quote would be about Jewish people under the nazi tyrrany. To die, it is easy, under such an odious apparatus. yet it is hard to survive, and that is what matters. The nazi's wish for the death of the jewish race, yet the jews attempt to struggle and gasp to survive. In addition, Spiegelman facilitates this frame once again illustrates two figures amongst this panel along with the quote; first, Anja's depression, which had accompanied her since long before; second, how much Vladek loves Anja, which indicates how much pain and stress he must be going through after her death.

Even a millionaire like Anja's father who has a relatively high social status and power is unable to escape from the Nazi's, let alone the normal jewish people. In the bigger picture, this shows how the Nazi's basically didn't care about a person's status, wealth, or reputation, as long as you are Jewish, you must die.

However, i dont think this should allow him to treat his son in a unpleasant way, always making him feel guilty and disapproves everything everyone around him does, just because they seem to be living and easier life and not experiencing the harsh things he has. "I know this is insane, but I somehow wish I had been in Auschwitz with my parents so I could really know what they lived through! In these panels, it gives an impression that under his father's strict circumstances, he does not rebel nor not listen to the orders and torturing things his father tells him to do. Throughout the novel, teenage Vladek tries to tell his father, he isn't sleeping enough or eating enough yet his father thinks he is giving the best for him, therefore he has to go through a 'slight' of pain to be the best. This really shows how he is quite compassionate and warming as a person, contrasting with Old Vladek.

I chose this moment in the novel because this page shows how cruel and chaotic this time period was. The background color supporting it enlarges how dark this time period was and how hard it is to survive. In panel 4 there is the star of David surrounding Vladek which seems like a cage to him that he cannot escape. This implies that the identity of a Jew would attach to him for the rest of his life. These last panels are emphasizing how hard life was because they hid in a house of a rich person this implies that money at that time is worthless because of race or identity.

In that kind of crucial time no one could be 100% safe, even some one like anja’s father. He’s a millionaire and he couldn’t escape or to control his own life. So that this quote is telling as that time no one could escape from killing and blood even a millionaire such as anja’s father.

This panel happens after Vladek hears about 4 Jews who were hanged for dealing goods without coupons. Vladek realises the extent of the Nazis' evil and brutality, and is terrified because he did lots of business without the use of coupons as well. In the panel above, the 4 dead people looming above Vladek show his thoughts - which are almost completely occupied by the fear of facing the same fate as his dead friends. The panel is very dark, which symbolises Vladek's negative feelings. On the right, the light shines on Richieu, who is playing with a toy and is unaware of the dangers around him. This provides effective contrast with Vladek and Anja, whose bodies are completely dark. In summary, this panel depicts the fear Vladek feels, as well as the enormous pressure he is under (he has to take care of Anja and Richieu - if he dies, they will suffer).

'And maybe one of them could have talked of me to the germans to try to save themselves' This sentence portrays how people only think for themselves for a living. This is further shown with the words ' save themselves ' because when they're not in war people are all friends and family but in this kind of extreme society the dark side of the personality starts to get shown. This sentence also implies that Vladek is a very careful and smart person because people wouldn't have thought of that even though they're in danger already.

I chose this extract because it showed that Vladek was being mistreated. The first panel in this scene breaks the fourth wall as Vladek is looking at the reader. The bold letters in the second panel shows that Vladek’s father is yelling at Vladek. This shows that Vladek’s father was harsh and aggressive. The next three panels shows that Vladek’s father is starving Vladek as he does not want Vladek to join the troops. The main reason why I chose this extract is because it shows that the actions of Vladek’s father had affected how Vladek treats Artie. Although Vladeks father is harsh and aggressive, but he is doing this to protect Vladek as he had once joined the army and it wasn’t pleasant. He does not want Vladek to experience what he did. Vladek also shows love this way as he threw away Arties jacket from previous chapters and gave him his own.

I chose this moment because it portrays the risks Vladek will take to get back to his family, and the cunningness that the Holocaust brought out in him. In this scene, Vladek pretends to be a Pole and convinces the train conductor to sneak him across the border. The way Spiegelman portrays this is particularly interesting. All Poles are portrayed as pigs in Maus, whereas Jews are portrayed as mice. By showing Vladek wearing a pig mask, Spiegelman effectively tells the audience what Vladek's intention is, and how convincing his act is. Not only this, but he's also breaking the law in order to get back to his family. These two panels show us how Vladek is adapting to the world around him, and is willing to take big risks to survive.

We can tell because in the first few characters he throw his sons jacket away and told him to wear his, if you only look at the surface you will probably think that he is just being weird or mean or anything but after you really think about this we can tell that he is just caring about his sons health because as a old age person he might think it’s too cold or is worried he will get sick.
Also when he tells the story we can see that he is always trying to tell the story so its not too depress, and that made the pictures and the story not to be sad or depress at all but to be honest the real story is way more depressing and sad then what vladek told his son. He is always trying to make himself look like he doesn’t care about what happened and is living a new life.
