In Chapter 12 Michele Norris goes through a variety of topics starting from her father's experiences in Chicago, and leading to the visit she made to Intrepid, the ship he served on. To explore every single topic she explored would take paragraphs.. But we'd like to mention a couple of the very important ones. One of the areas Norris covered was the representation of middle class black families in America and even globally. "Average" families like hers weren't portrayed in the media until the Huxtables from The Cosby Show. Norris also wrote about her mother taking her to get a hair cut-- It was a major transformation point for her. This decision made by Betty Norris showed the genuine love she had for her ex- husband. They weren't together anymore, but she was doing her part in helping him raise their child.

Michele Norris wasn't able to speak at her father's funeral because she was feeling heartbroken, grief stricken and lonely. As she figured out her father's story she learns that she should have asked him questions when he was alive. She said to ask questions about your family and find out more even though it could be uncomfortable. She believes that history is a big part of your life. You should ask questions because if you find out more about your family you can find out more about yourself.

Silence can be a great thing... it surely raised Michele Norris, and look how she turned out. It has some great benefits. Belvin Jr.'s silence helped him ensure that he wasn't being contradicting in the way he raised his children. He put his awful experiences behind him, and he didn't let them hinder him from a better future. Yet silence can also be negative. While helping generations to come have a more optimistic point of view, it also buries important information that needs to be shared. Information that makes us who we are.
