School Safety by Jessica Niebel

School safety is never out of our minds, but it definitely has come into a new light recently. I would like to get your input on school security. What can we do better? What do we do know that you don't like or see a value in? What are your suggestions for a campus such as ours?

We have kids going to SpEd, Rti math, Rti reading, speech, and LGI for work with aides. I totally understand the reasoning behind this, however, it takes a ton of time to lock and relock. IF we would have an actual LOCK DOWN, I would have to open my door anyway, look out into the hallway to check for kids in the hallway, then relock my door.

I am close to two entrances and I'm not sure I would have time to lock both in a real emergency, with someone coming down that hall. However, I don't think keeping the doors locked all the time is the solution. Locked doors is creating an environment that students are not welcome in my room when I'm teaching. I have students from all grades coming in and out during the day to work. Not to mention the RTI, Special Ed, bathroom, drink, etc students coming and going throughout class.
