Example: 
When I was young, I had wonderful parents.  I did not realize it.  I took them for granted.  My other friends had parents who screamed at them all the time and put tremendous pressure to get good grades, etc.  My parents just wanted to see us happy.  

I did not realize that my parents had such great values.  They had pretty good moral compasses.  They always taught me the Golden Rule "to treat others as though I wanted to be treated."   

Occasionally, I would grouse at my parents and not be so nice.  I only realize, upon seeing my parents die, how truly lucky I was!

In those days, they called distinguished small law firms "boutiques" (as though talking about a fancy dress shop). I thought I had hit "the big time" working for some a distinguished firm. Not so fast! Granted, it was distinguished, but the "cast of characters" in this law firm are so memorable. One of our lead attorneys was Mr. Milton Talent. He had grown up on the "mean streets" (tough side) of Boston, fighting his way in street fights. Somehow, after getting in trouble, he got interested in the law. He was incredibly smart and graduated from Harvard Law School when he was 20 years old. Mr. Talent would read the Wall Street Journal from cover to cover every day and we knew the office would be peaceful. The minute he was done with the paper, he would come out screaming "do this," "do that," TRISH...T R I S H! Where is this file?" Trish would work tirelessly to find his important case file whenever he lost it. His son, U.S. Senator James Talent, was the polar opposite, very stately. He would always say "how are you doing, ladies?" Mr. Miller was loveable, but kind of a grump. He would come in puffing his pipe. Mr. Kuelthau came in and looked like he had just eaten a pile of bats..there was a peculiar scowl on his mouth. The secretaries in the office all were lovely; however, Jan was the "wild hair" of the group. She would come in the office with miniskirts and always looked like she had been out all night. One day, Mr. Miller came out and asked how to spell a word. There weren't spellchecks in those days. All of us were giving our opinions. Then, old Mr. Talent shot out the door like a bat out of Hell and said "you are all wrong..the word is spelled this way." We continued to argue, and then finally Carole got a dictionary and showed Mr. Talent that he was, indeed, wrong. He looked up at all us with a defiant look, looked back down at the dictionary, pointed to the word and said "well, the dictionary is WRONG!" We all howled out laughing. Over the years I worked there, I experienced many funny situations like that.
