As the need arises (intervention for behavior) for students in middle school in foster care, the students will be referred by teachers and/or administration. Once the students are determined, I will schedule an initial introduction meeting with the student and the student's house parent. During this meeting we will determine the student's readiness and willingness to participate in the group, as well as obtaining informed consent.

In this meeting, we will discuss the purpose, goals, and benefits of the group. The student will fill out a pre-assessment and we will have a conversation about the goals and activities the group will endure. Depending on the student's reaction, this will help determine if they will be a good fit for group counseling or if individual counseling sessions are a better fit. Not all students will be ecstatic about joining a group to talk about their behavior, but if their initial reaction is fair and they're open to the idea, then they would be a good fit for the group.

Students will be screened individually to determine if the group is the right fit for them, like a pre-screening. Once the group is established, the initial meeting will help determine if a group environment works for them as an individual needing assistance.

During this time, the guardian will be presented with an informed consent form. The parent can choose to take the consent form with them, as long as the form is turned in before the first official meeting date of the group.

FJH requires all parents sign an informed consent form at the beginning of the year in order for the students to partake in any counseling sessions, however, an additional form would need to be signed for students to participate in group counseling.

The provided document gives a guideline to how ground rules and expectations for a counseling group can be set up. This document could be used to give each student the opportunity to see what the expectations and rules of the group are. All of the rules provided would be rules that I would set before the group began. However, it is important to give the students the opportunity to create their own guidelines as it would give them a sense of belonging to the group.

Stage 1-

I intend to build relationships with each group member by being involved in the discussion, guiding them as they respond, and being a trusted adult that they can open up to. Confidentiality will be specifically addressed in the first meeting, but will be revisited in every session. This way the students understand how important it is to keep the contents of the group confidential. It is important that the students understand that they are not keeping secrets on behalf of another student, but rather not discussing or giving details to what another student has shared in the group. As far as group norms, I think a discussion with the group on their expectations will help set a group norm.

Stage 2-

The group's lessons for each session will be built toward the student learning outcomes ensuring that the students are working productively toward their goals. At the end of each session, the students will be given an 'end of session' survey, which will include questions about their ability to identify best behaviors and more. The students will regularly complete verbal formative assessments throughout the session.

Stage 3-

As the group comes to a close, I think it would be appropriate to open discussion with the group about how they feel about the group coming to an end. At the point of closing the group, each member of the group will have demonstrated their knowledge and skills, not only as a part of the scenarios covered in the group, but through results seen outside the group within the classroom and at home. Confidentiality will be addressed, as it was addressed every session. The students will understand that confidentiality continues, not as them keeping secrets, but rather omitting details that would give away key information.

A school counselor is legally required to design a program to include a responsive services component to intervention on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student's continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk (2 Texas Education Code § 33.005). The counseling group is created in direct correlation to the needs of the students struggling with their behavior. These students need interventions in place to assist them in coping strategies, appropriate behaviors, and more. The education code legally binds counselors to intervene and create a program to assist students.

The first legal/ethical requirement of a school counselor that pertains to group counseling is A. 2. Confidentiality: Inform students of the purposes, goals, techniques, rules and procedures under which they may receive counseling. Disclosure includes informed consent and clarification of the limits of confidentiality (American School Counselor Association, 2022).

For students to be able to participate in group counseling, it is important for the students to be aware of the purposes, goals, techniques, rules and procedures of the group. Each student must have an informed consent form signed by a parent/guardian in order to participate and students must have an understanding that everything discussed in the group will be confidential, unless they are intend to harm themselves or others. This supports the role of the counselor by creating a universal understanding that we are required to inform someone else if the threat arises of harming oneself or another.
