We started working on the project trying to think of what Christmas traditions we would like to share with our penpals and collecting all the materials we would use.

2nd week of November

After we decided on the format of our letter and the Greek customs and traditions we were going to write about, the students started to write their letters.

3rd week of November

The Epiphany Custom-The Greek Orthodox blessing of the waters, a tradition where a priest throws a cross into the water and the divers try retrieve it. The person who catches the cross is considered ti be blessed for the year.

They are both traditional Greek Christmas sweets made with pure Greek products like honey, butter, almonds and walnuts.

The Vasilopita

The Vasilopita is about a unique Greek tradition which takes place on the 1st day of the New Year where Greek people cut a big cake with a hidden coin in it. The person who finds the coin is considered to be lucky for the whole year to come.

We were so happy to receive the cards from our pen pals from Spain, read them in class and talk about Spanish Christmas and New Year’s traditions. We learnt so many new things and it was an exciting experience!

After receiving and reading all the cards we had a zoom meeting with our Spanish pen pals. The students had the chance to meet the people they had exchanged cards with, ask and answer any queries there were about the letters and be engaged this way in an exciting cultural trip …. !!!!!

We also sent some cards to Skopelos island before the closing of schools for Christmas holiday to exchange greetings as they had already some cards to us!!!!

We would like to thank all the participating schools in the project and especially Alejandra and her fabulous students for leading the procedure!!! Farewell to all of you!!! It was a nice trip which will be forever in our hearts!!!
