The article “Are Internet Filters and Firewalls Irreverent” was an interesting look into the constant struggle between administrator Internet restrictions and tech savvy students that find ways around these restrictions. Being a “Digital Native” myself, I tend to lean with the side of the students.  It frustrates me to have websites blocked, especially if they can be used as educational tools in my classroom. 

The student says, “Firewalls are not something I or my peers really think about. If we're not allowed to get on a website, we'll find a way to get on the website.”  I agree with this statement wholeheartedly.  I have witnessed firsthand how handy students are at getting to a site that’s blocked.  I can relate to the school and administrations duty to protect the students. However, the argument that it is too distracting can be said for a multitude of things.  Honestly, if a student is not being actively engaged he or she will be distracted by their shoelaces (I have also witnessed this firsthand).

This argument doesn’t seem to have a solution,and I believe it will be an issue that we as educators will be dealing with for a long time.  Discussing the use of the Internet with administrators, teachers and students alike will help.  Teachers need to continue to be resourceful and find ways to engage their students, with or without certain websites.
