Procedure:
1. Conducting a questionnaire. Type of questionnaire used was google form in the form of multiple-choice questions was blasted from 14 November till 30 November 2018 through whatsapp to 92 random respondents. 10 questions were given regarding to the problem and solution.
2. An expert who works as senior lecturer from Food Science program, Faculty Science and Technology, UKM Bangi was interviewed to discuss more about the solution.
3. A documentation from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation was found in the internet which discussed about the global status of seaweed, trade and its production.
Findings:
1) Environment
-85.9% agree to use seaweed straw instead of plastic straw. They said that seaweed staw is biodegradable, environmental-friendly and nutritious.
2) Financial
-40.2% from 92 respondents agree to pay RM1 per piece of the seaweed straw because they are all realize the effects of using plastic straw towards our ecosystem.
-68.5% agree and willing to pay more for a better ecosystem for today in the future.
- Since Malaysia is the seventh largest seaweed resources and surrounded with water, our country has the potential to make sure there's continuos supply of seaweed so it means that seaweed straw is suitable to sell in Malaysia and cultivating more seaweed can decrease the price of the seaweed straw itself.
3) Innovation
- Coloring agents and flavors such as mango or vanilla can be added to the seaweed straw to make it tastes better and improve its texture.
4) Health
- Post-drink snack which it can be eaten.
- It has high fiber and iodine content.

Introduction & Overview

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The plastic straws create a big problem for the environment especially in marine life. The excessive consume of plastic straw each year lead to clog the ocean and killing marine life due to ingestion of it.

2.0 OVERVIEW

Our planet is dying even we are aware of this reality, yet we are doing very little to help save it. Massive use of plastic straw from day to day gives a big impact toward this problems where exposing the realities of the effects of plastic straw in our oceans. Thus for over the past weeks, we already heard about these big companies like KFC, Starbucks and McDonald jumped into this green movement by skip the straw in order to reduce straw consumption. In Malaysia plastic straw end up in the ocean primarily through human error, often left on beaches in coastal communities and seaside resorts as almost state in Malaysia have beaches. Moreover one review of plastic straw waste in the ocean put Malaysia as a moderate plastic polluter and that is the Asian countries are among the highest polluters.

In order to understand the environmental impact of plastic straw, it is important to let us know the difference between biodegrading and degrading. Biodegrading is when an item can be naturally break down and digested by microorganisms and then naturally recycled into new organic molecules. On the other hand, degrading is just the process of breaking down into smaller pieces. However, what’s really the problem that happening is the plastic is breaking into smaller microplastic as the plastic straw take up 200 years to degrade. Thus, one of the major issues with plastic straw is they are too small and lightweight to be captured in modern recycling equipment. Whenever there is an ocean coastline cleanup, plastic straws never fail to make it on the list of one of the most found ocean litter. All these straws and plastic polluting our oceans is having a negative impact on marine life. Take for example for video, where researchers off the coast of Costa Rica remove a plastic straw that had been embedded in the nostril of an Olive ridley sea turtle. It’s likely that the sea turtle accidentally swallowed the straw, and then had it stuck up its nostril while trying to cough the straw out. Straws are also especially dangerous to seabirds, as they can be easily picked up and swallowed, suffocating and choking the bird. In fact, over 1 million seabirds die each year from ingesting plastic.

As a conclusion, regarding to the finding that we obtained, 85.9% of respondents agree to use seaweed straw instead plastic straw due to its environmental-friendly and biodegradable materials.Besides that, innovation is done to attract users, including the use of delicious colors and flavor. Other than that, seaweed are rich in nutrition especially iodine good for our body health. By cultivating more seaweed in future, a solution can be made to reduce its cost in productions.

The data obtained clearly indicates that 88% agree that plastic straw pollute water and damage our ecosystem. For the water pollution, especially it happen at the ocean because all the rubbish will end at the ocean and quality of clean water will be reduce. Beside that, it will affect population of marine life such as turtle, fish and seabird. The problem was further worsened by using a plastic straw everyday when buy a beverage and make the usage of plastic straw increase from day by day. Therefore, the most affected place with plastic straw is coastal area. The severity of the problems faced is lack of awareness about the disadvantage in using plastic straw to environment . It can conclude that the problem will give big effect on future if no remedial actions are taken together to save our environment.
