What is the Caribbean?
There are many definitions that attempt to explain and define the Caribbean in their own separate ways, however, the true definition of the Caribbean can only be seen when all of the known definitions are incorporated into one another and looked at as one entity instead of several unconnected definitions. Some of the definitions that will be examined below are the geological definitions, the geographical definitions, the historical definitions and lastly the political definitions:

Geological: The Caribbean can be located snugly in between the North American, South American and the Cocos plates, on the Caribbean plate. However, this geological definition does not wholly encompass all that is the Caribbean, as this definition excludes islands such as Cuba and the Bahamas that are found on the North American plate. Thus this geological definition does not holistically encompass everything that is the Caribbean.

Geographical: Another definition that is also used more frequently is the Caribbean Basin definition which defines the Caribbean as any area washed by the Caribbean sea, once again, this definition proves to be flawed as it excludes the inland territories of Central America as well as Barbados which is washed by the Atlantic sea.

Historical: This definition describes the Caribbean based upon its historical past, and lays the foundation which links all of the territories through their experiences of European colonization, slavery and the Plantation system, and indentureship. This definition insinuates that the territories of the Caribbean can be defined as having the same historical and cultural experiences.

Political: Lastly the political definition bases its description of the Caribbean on the foundation that in the Caribbean there are three dominant government systems.

Independent States- Territories which were former colonies and are now self-governed independent states, which can choose their own methods of governance which may be different from their once Colonial masters. (E.g. Trinidad, Barbados, The Bahamas etc.)

Associated States- Territories which are not independent however they have some privileges of an Independent state. (E.g. Puerto Rico)

Colonial Dependent States- Territories which are not independent and have no privileges like the Associated States. (E.g. Cayman Islands, Guadeloupe, Turks and Caicos Islands)

Hence, it is only when one fully understands the definition of the Caribbean and all it encompasses, that it becomes easier to apply the teachings of Caribbean Civilisation to the everyday issues people of the Caribbean face daily, and to the history of the Caribbean.

Below are some of the Topics and Activities posted in the Caribbean Civilisation course, that shall be answered and discussed.

"Every island of the Caribbean is the site of a deep haunting. Before Columbus, the various indigenous peoples - the Arawaks, the Caribs, the Tainos - lived in relative harmony with the land, the sea and each other. Everything changed in 1492: the Amerindian people quickly were decimated, their presense erased by disease, wars and overwork. These are the Caribbean's oldest ghosts, almost invisible in history yet still present in the form of place names, fragments of language, ancient foods and pockets of descendants speckling the islands."
-Martin Munro

The arrival of these groups to the Caribbean, brought with them their cultural practices in the form of festivals, arts, religion, sports and food.
