"Speed dating"

This is an activity that I have done many times over the years, and my students always have fun during it. I divide my students into two lines and get those two lines to sit in front of each other. They are then given 2-3 mins to discuss/debate whatever the topic of the day is. E.g. if their task is to find the perfect flatmate, they need to ask a series of questions to see if that person is ideal. After 3 mins, one line moves one space to their left, so they are all speaking to someone new. This repeats until they have all spoken to each other.

Find someone who

Great activity to get students up and about, mingling with each other. The teacher creates a worksheet with questions for students to find someone who fulfills what the question is asking them e.g. find someone who went to a cold country on vacation last year. They would need to speak to different members of the class and ask them the question. If a student says they went to a cold country on holiday, then they would need to ask follow up questions to get more information out of them.

Peer interviews

Students are divided into employers and candidates. The employers first get together and start coming up with questions that they can ask the potential employee in an interview. The candidates get together and prepare each other for the possible questions they might get asked and also prepare a few questions of their own, e.g. how much is being offered for this position? Employers and candidates then get paired up and have their interviews. They speak to a few different candidates and then employers come together to decide who they'll offer the position to.

Role plays

Students are assigned a role and act out a scenario where they can use the target language.

Reverse charades

A fun activity I got from a TV show to review vocabulary in a communicative way. If they are reviewing hobbies, for example, and one of the words is fishing, student A would instruct student B to swing their arm, then swing it forward (as if they were throwing the bait and hook in the water with the fishing rod). Student B would do this action with their hands and try to guess the activity they are acting out.

Short Talk

Students will select a topic from a flashcard to share their understanding.

This activity provides topics for students to interact spontaneously and express their initial ideas through conversation.

Meanwhile, students must capture key words and review them after the activity to double-check their understanding.
