It was a good reminder that with reading challenges at the high school level, students have felt frustration for YEARS. The student in the video described it as "the worst feeling ever". It is so important to be cognizant of the reality that they have strong emotional reactions and that their skill-level will often impact their behavior in and out of the classroom because of how it makes them feel.

Really difficult to understand and process, but I was able to push through largely because I have a frame and reference for reading under normal circumstances that formed a framework for me. I can't imagine how much more difficult it would be if that had been my entire history with reading. It would make any task that involved reading so much more daunting.

Watching the math challenges video reminded me how our attitude towards the students’ learning can have such a big impact. Staying positive and encouraging can be exactly what that student needs when they feel despair about their abilities to be successful in whatever they’re doing.

I LOVED how the presenter said "let's keep our eyes focused on the gifts of our children, their strengths... their spontaneity, creativity, etc. So we can help them unwrap their gifts!" That's a re-framing technique that I think will really help me to keep in mind a sense of wonder at the uniqueness of each child. I also loved how Noah (the 11th grader) described ways he helped himself focus - such as doing a pushup with each verb he was learning in Latin! Super creative and practical!

I think that all individual students are unique and have their own methods and ways of learning. We as teachers need to be patient & use the tools we know to try and assist these students. We can also take time to continue to learn more methods that will assist all students and not be afraid to try new approaches. I feel all students want to be successful in their adventures in school.
