This love story takes place in the year of 1986. A story of first and young love. Although Eleanor and Park are both misfits, they could not be more different. It all started with Eleanor as the new student. All the seats on the bus were taken and Park reluctantly lets her sit next to him. At first Park despises Eleanor, but that soon changes...

Character

My favorite character from this book was Park. I feel that I can relate more to Park, compared to Eleanor. Park has his mom, dad, brother, and grandparents. Eleanor, on the other hand, has her mom, four siblings, and an abusive and alcoholic stepfather. Park lives in a nice house, and has his own room. Eleanor has to share a cramped bedroom with her four siblings, and has a curtain separating the bathroom and the kitchen, in a so called house.

Important Event

An important event was when Eleanor and Park sat next to each other on the bus. Eleanor was new to the school, and all the seats on the bus were taken. Eleanor looked like she was going to cry so, Park let her sit next to him. At first, Park didn't like Eleanor and regretted letting her sit next to him. Park and Eleanor then started to talk and become friends/get closer.

Tone

I would describe the tone of this book as vivid/youthful. Eleanor and Park describe things vividly, using memorable phrases and plenty of humor and spirit. It's kind of like going through life the way Eleanor thinks Park looks in his eyeliner—with the "volume turned up".

Central Idea

The central idea of Eleanor and Park was clearly, the wonder of first love. This central idea is constantly seen throughout the whole book and is very clear. I think that this central idea can apply to everyone at some point in their lives, as they experience first love.

I found this book intriguing, and I could not stop reading it. The reason why I only gave this book four out of five stars is because it can get a little confusing. There would be times when I would forget, and think the book was changing perspectives, when really, it would just focus in more on that character.

Rainbow Rowell always gets straight to the point. Rowell speaks like a teenager, letting her writing style reflect the youth and personality of her characters. She stays close to what her characters are thinking and feeling, and expresses it in a direct, often funny way.
