Baby Alive

Based on our lecture about consumption I chose to write about baby alive. Baby alive was originally made by Keener in 1973 and re released in 2006 by Hasbro. Society has this ideology that women are supposed to stay home and take care of the kids. Young girls are raised based on social norms and consumers play into that when marketing a product. The power in this youtube commercial shows a young girl feeding and taking care of a baby at a really young age. This gives young girls the impression that its easy to care for a baby, you just feed it and hold it and viola! The use of critical media literacy is to target an audience of young girls to by this product. There are several Baby Alive options such as Baby Alive super snacks and Baby Alive real surprises. These dolls make a huge profit for the company ranging in price from $50.00-$262.00. There are several accessories available for purchase such as diapers and additional food for the baby which also contributes to the companies profits. The pleasure little girls get out of having a baby alive is the joy of having an object that they think loves them. Several of the baby alive commercials show the baby actually telling the girls "I love you" and the girls telling the baby in return. This can provide a child with a sense of happiness and they may feel needed. This correlates with our lecture on capitalizing on kids desires. Consumers market love to little girls in order to gain their attention. This brings me to my last point of kids growing up faster than they need to due to what they are being taught on TV. Per the youtube video in our lecture the middle age range for young girls used to be 8-12 and now it is 6-12. This is a very scary thought.
(Danielle Young)
