At first, the first government of France was the Estates General, which included the first estate, the second estate, and the third estate. The first estate was monarchs and popes. The Second estate were nobles, and the third estate was commoners. All estates except for the third estate were not required to pay taxes because of this, the third estate struggled to pay for food. King Louis XIV was a weak and indecisive leader, and would spend the taxes on themselves rather than the people. This lead to the people wanting to be represented in the Estates General. Because king Louis XIV was a weak leader, he would send the country into dept with wars and projects. The people wanted change, so they prepared cashiers, which were notebooks listing their issues for their meeting in May. As each estate had one vote, the third estate was outvoted 2 to 1 in May. The third estate wanted to have a meeting with the other estates where they voted by individuals instead of a group. So in May 1789 they changed to the National Assembly, which is representation based on population. A man named Robespierre was an advocate for the third estate, and was known for being incorruptible. He believed the French should have a republic government. On the day where they were going to the National Assembly, the third and second estate planned to lock the doors for the third estate, because they knew the third estate would win the vote. When the third estate arrived and realized they were locked out, they were angered, so they gathered near a tennis court. They promised they wouldn’t leave until there was a constitution in place. This event was called the Tennis Court Oath, which happened on June 20, 1789.

The third estate was afraid that the National Assembly would be dissolved. Commoners felt an attack on their rights and armed themselves. The third estate rise up against the soldiers at the Bastille, and succeeded in freeing political prisoners, and gaining weapons from the armory. This event was called the Bastille that happened in July 1789. Later in October the woman and men decided to march to the Place of Versailles. They were angry over the price of bread, and there was a rumor the Marie Annointe, the queen of France and Louis XVI were holding all the wheat and flour. As well, they were angry that the queen was spending all of France’s money on her luxuries and parties. After this event, queen Marie Annointe and Louis XVI would never see the palace of Versailles again. The people presented a 2nd attempt on the government, which was called the legislative government. The legislative government was the idea that king Louis XVI would work with the people, more like a constitutional monarchy. The Legislative was an attempt to keep the monarchy and the people happy, and to stable a weak leadership. They tried this because they never had a government without monarchy. In January 1793, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed for neglecting the people and attempting to launch a counter-revolution against them. Since the legislative government didn’t work, they attempted a new government, which was called the First Republic, which was ordered by Robespierre. At first Robespierre was liked by the people for supporting people’s rights, but soon this would change. Robespierre believed it was necessary to create the Republic that he had envisioned. The first Republic would kill anyone that spoke against the revolution. About 70,000 people were put to death by Robespierre the and the Guillotine. The Republic gained too much power, and instead of the Republic, he turned into a dictator. On July 28 1794 he was executed, which puts causes the Reign of Terror to end.

A military genius named Napoleon graduates at the age of sixteen, and stages a coup d’état in 1799 to overthrow the directory government. Napoleon had many achievements like invading and colonizing Egypt. He conquers Austria, Prussia, Portugal, and Spain. In whatever country he conquered, he would put his families in charge of them. He uses the continental system to weaken England in war. Napoléon also made many political changes like eliminating the estate system, he allows freedom of religion, he restores a centralized government, he increases education, he improves the relationship with the Pope, sells the territory in North America to support his campaigns, he also creates the Napoleonic codes. The first government of the revolution was the National Assembly, which was representation based on the population and lasted to 1789-1791. Next was the Legislative Assembly, which was when they tried to keep the people content, which lasted to October 1791-August 1792. Then was the constitutional monarchy, which was when the monarchy shares power with the people and the Parliament, which lasted to September 1792-1795. Lastly, the directory took place which contained a lower house and an upper house. The lower house proposed laws for the government and the Upper house accepted or rejects those laws, this lasted to 1795-1799.
