This activity follows on from the scoping workshop on 20th July, which explored how Thrive by Design could support access and inclusion considerations for the development of the Maternal Mental Health Service.

Thrive by Design currently has access to £50,000 worth of funding to explore access and inclusion experiences for different people within Maternal Mental Health. This funding includes costs related to Thrive by Design supporting scoping and planning activities.

What will this activity support us to do?

The questions contained within this activity will support Thrive by Design to understand and define what their role could be in supporting this work. Once we receive further feedback we will present options to the stakeholder group to prioritize how we move forward and where the money can be used to support the development of the service.

In the workshop there seemed to be some difference in the priorities and need for this work at a strategic (programme) level and service level.

Examples given (not an exhaustive list):

Programme level

Strategic plan, framework, our approach - co-designed with different groups?

No specific group / community highlighted to engage with to understand access and inclusion needs / opportunities

Service design and development level

Engagement with different groups (notably people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities) to understand and support access and inclusion

Practical / financial support for things like expenses for engagement

Supporting peer support within communities

Though each area will inform and impact each other, Thrive by Design cannot support all areas of work.

Which area of work takes priority? How do we measure / understand this?

With regard to question 1, what are the long term and short term priorities at a programme and service level?

It would be helpful for us to understand what space for action we have, prior to the service being launched and post launch, to help structure our time and understand capacity (for Thrive and for engagement, building relationships).

Potential opportunities:

Work with the new service for a period of time post launch to understand experience and highlight opportunities for change

This would also help us to understand and gather data / insights on who is not engaging / experiencing barriers and what type of barriers

Considerations:

Rebecca has already shared some insights with us around 'The Long Term Plan Ambition', but it would be good to understand how this translates into service design steps and stages for different people.

Supporting relationships and understanding access and inclusion experiences for different people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities was highlighted as an opportunity for this work to support the development of the Maternal Mental Health service.

Other groups / communities were discussed, such as Asylum Seekers and Refugees.

How might we prioritise which groups we engage with to understand their experiences of access and inclusion?

What data and or insights do you have to support this prioritisation?

What other groups are experiencing increased barriers or risks to not accessing support for maternal mental health?

Key considerations:

Due to timings, funding and capacity we will have limited opportunities to build and foster relationships with different communities. We would also like to have the time to ensure that our approach is trauma informed and co-designed with communities and support organisations, so this will have to be factored into timings.

Taking this approach will support on-going trust and relationships with services.

Questions:

Is there an opportunity to build on / align existing relationships with different people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, as part of the work we are doing with the Perinatal Mental Health Project?

How might we build on / support conversations / work that is already happening? (Notably work that Rebecca is already doing)
