Dorothea Dix was the women who began this movement after she witnessed the way the prisoners were being treated. She noticed that the prisoners were in chains and some were kept in small cages like animals. Children were being imprisoned with adults and there was little food available for them. In addition, some prisoners were in jail because of debts as little as twenty dollars. Dorothea Dix decided to put an end to the awful treatment of prisoners. She then notified the state legislature of what she saw. In the end, cruel punishment was illegal, people who owed debt could not be imprisoned, and juvy was created for children who were imprisoned.
