“The masses never revolt of their own accord, and they never revolt merely because they are oppressed. Indeed, so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison, they never even become aware that they are oppressed.” (Part 2, Chapter 9, pg.227)

The Party has two factors that allow them to stay in power and keep the people oblivious to their actions. First, the continuous warfare exhibited by the slogan War Is Peace keeps the people believing the area they live in is the best option for them. Additionally, the use of war prevents supplies from ever being abundant or too low. This leaves the people in a constant state of neutrality where no situation ever increases or decreases their standard of living. The second factor is the ministries which serve to destroy any information that demonstrates previous forms of political thought that challenge the ideas of the Party. This creates a present where people accept this way of life as it is the only way and those who have knowledge of other political systems stay quiet due to the presence of the Thought Police. Through the lack of comparison the future is also sealed off as children grow up with the idea of loving Big Brother and getting rid of those who don’t as can be seen with children reporting their own family members for having thoughts contrary to The Party’s beliefs.

"You will work for a while, you will be caught, you will confess, and then you will die... There is no possibility that any perceptible change will happen within our own lifetime. We are the dead." Part 2, Chapter 8, pg. 192

O’Brien’s words ring true for the novel 1984 because of the dystopian world they live in. They live in a world of lies where only they know the truth. The control of media, the 2 minutes hate, and the destruction of any documents that would expose The Party allows the Party to maintain power. Through the structure they have built, The Party is the truth and previous systems of thought only bring about misery and pain. Therefore, Winston and The Brotherhood face an uphill battle where they must restructure the mindset of those who see them as the biggest enemy in their lives. Winston himself acknowledges that his life will not be enough to see significant change as he is prepared to die when he begins to write his diary. However, the thought that The Brotherhood actually exists and his love for Julia fuels him into believing in a better future and turns him into the most dangerous type of person in the eyes of The Party.

"With those children, he thought that women must lead a life of terror. Another year or two, and they would be watching her night and day for any symptoms of being an enemy of the party. Nearly all children nowadays were horrible, they were turned into savages. They loved the party and everything connected to it.”

This is showing how the children were affected by the party, the party in which they love. Also shown as a demonstration that no one is safe from getting caught and being turned into the party, making Winston more fearful and uncomfortable of the idea.

“Hate Song”

Played during the event for Hate Week when the city is filled with heat and the energy of life.Winston becomes increasingly obsessed with the room above Mr. Charrington’s shop, thinking about it even when he cannot go there. He fantasizes that Katherine will die, which would allow him to marry Julia; he even dreams of altering his identity to become a prole.

A curious emotion stirred in Winston’s heart. In front of him was an enemy who was trying to kill him: in front of him, also, was a human creature, in pain and perhaps with a broken bone. (Pg 88, Ch.1 ,Part 2)

This quote described when the girl stumbled and fell on her almost flat on her face. She cried out a bit since she fell on her injured arm, but she had the expression of fear instead of pain on her face. As Winston saw her, the quote showed that he was feeling bad for the girl, which it was confusing for him as this girl tried to kill him - an enemy. At the same time, in his eyes there were this human being that’s enduring from the pains that need help. The quote showed us Winston’s inner conflict as he feel sympathize for his enemy, he allowed himself to have the freedom of emotions that showed such compassion and sadness, under a society that considered emotions as a weakness. Also as he react to Julia’s injuries, it showed that even under a corrupted government, a man would always be a man, and no matter how he was raised, he would always try to protect other people.

The smell of her hair, the taste of her mouth, the feeling of her skin seemed to have got inside him, or into the air all around him. She had become a physical necessity, something that he not only wanted but felt that he had a right to. " (Part 2, Chapter 4, pg. 115)

The quote described Julia in an aesthetic voice, of Julia’s features in a dreamy way on her and Winston’s second time of making love, while the first one was out of will, that time it was far different. As Winston asked Julia to come over, she couldn’t an this anger him, he felt like she wasn’t something he wanted but something he had the right to. This quote explained to the readers of Winston’s affection toward Julia, of how much he love her, the feeling of wanting her. It also mark the start of disloyalty and disbelief in their relationship as Winston slowly starting to doubt Julia’s loyalty, and as the relationship continue, Winston’s respect toward Julia is slowly decreasing as he think of Julia as an object that is in his possession, something that Winston has the right to obtain and control.

“He had the sensation of stepping into the dampness of a grave, and it was not much better because he had always known that the grave was there and waiting for him.” (Part 2, Chapter 6, pg. 132)

Winston has developed a strange feeling of trust for O’Brien, who he suspects might even be a member of the Brotherhood and thus opposed to Big Brother. O’Brien confirms this in Winston’s mind through a reference to Syme. He interprets this as a signal that he is to be trusted, and when O’Brien gives him his address so that he can get an advanced copy of the newest edition of the Newspeak dictionary, he comprehends this as O’Brien really saying, “If you ever want to see me, this is where I can be found.” He believes that O’Brien is sympathetic towards him, but also knows on another level that he has no logical or factual basis for thinking this. His encounter with O’Brien, exposes a distressing example of “doublethink.” He experiences an instinctive feeling of hope and hysteria, feeling that he has taken a big step from thoughtcrime. Opposing Big Brother moved from thoughts to words, and words to actions. The last step he recognizes “was something that would happen in the Ministry of Love.”

"It’s the one thing they can’t do. They can make you say anything – anything – but they can’t make you believe it. They can’t get inside you." (Part 2, Chapter 7, pg. 137)

Winston and Julia discuss betrayal and the inevitability of their capture. If caught by the Thought Police, they must not betray each other. Both understand they will be made to confess and say anything the Party wishes, but as long as they do not stop loving each other, they will not have truly betrayed each other. The Party cannot make you stop loving someone. The Party can monitor a person’s thoughts and actions through telescreens, and can control their knowledge and understanding through propaganda. They can even force a person to confess to a crime, however, they both resolve that their shared loyalty to each other shall triumph against such tactics and against Big Brother.

“ I hate purity. I hate goodness. I don’t want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones”
(Part 2 page 104)

He hates Big Brother as well as the Party members that depict a perfect holy society. He wants everyone to not follow their strict laws and to finally rebel against them. Winston doesn't want to be part of a society where you are being watched 24/7 with no privacy. He wants to break off from Big Brother and rebel against them and he wishes that everyone would, however he is frustrated that citizens are completely brainwashed to not stand up for their rights. He desires to take down the union and finally get the truth about the war that is occurring since his memory is fading away. "If he would have infected them with Leprosy and Syphilis... anything to rot, to weaken, to undermine" is a metaphor that symbolizes his hatred towards the party. He is tired of citizens following the government without questioning why they really have to be so oppressed by them. He doesn’t want to hide his emotion towards them however if he doesn’t then he would get eliminated over night by the thought police.

Julia: “ We’re not dead yet”. Winston: “ Not physically.... But it makes little difference… death and life are the same thing”
(Part 2 page 113)

Julia claims that her and Winston are not yet dead so they should enjoy their lives while they can. Winston however exclaims that they aren’t dead physically however emotionally they are life less; an individual without emotion is similar to a corpse. A life that is constantly being monitored is a life not worth living because you are not being yourself. You are being controlled by the government and if you make one wrong facial expression you can get eliminated. There is no freedom of speech, Winston knows that what he is breaking rules and that is thrilling to him however he also acknowledges that by doing so, he is cutting his life short. He would rather live a good life that expresses who he is as well as having the constant thrive of being a rebellion even if it means cutting his life sooner. He would rather live a short life enjoyable life than living a long dreadful life that is constantly getting the approval of Big Brother in order to not get yourself killed.
