When he discovered the body he saw that were twelve stabs. So, he had a mission : find the killer of Edwar Ratchett. At begining, he think that was Hector MacQueen his partner. In fact, Ractchett Laundered money so MacQueen found that inequitable so he can be the murder. But, Hercule Poirot told us that the other people can be also the killer because their behavior were strange. Furthermore, the detective found a white handkerchief with the embroidered letter "H" and the Ratchett's watch who was blocked at 2:00 A.M in the dead man's room. After, he discovers a buttom of uniform, it was mystérious. On day, Hercule said that anavalanche fell on the train so during a few days he was stoped. Hercule surpised MacQueen burning papers and maybe they were clues... Poirot find the Ratchett's personal dairy who he wrote that the pepole who were on the train knew the Amstrong's family. And Hercule know that the victim had problems with this family.
With this information the fabulous detective thing that the twelve persons killed Ratchett because he killed Daysi Amstrong. So, Poirot asked them and they admited the thruth.
