LONGTERMINISM: the ethical view that positively influencing the long-term future is a key moral priority of our time.

IDENTITY: the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.

I believe that yes, Chris did regret the extreme measures he took, that maybe he could have handled the situation in a safer way that could have lead him in another direction to his life.

"He seemed to have moved beyond his need to assert so adamantly his autonomy, his need to separate himself from his parents. Maybe he was prepared to forgive their imperfection; he was even prepared to forgive some of his own. McCandless seemed ready, perhaps, to go home." - Page 168

The difference between Chris and Tolstoy is that Chris believes that to live a meaningful life, he must be completely alone and independent. But Tolstoy believed that living happily means you keep doing things for people. And when Chris finished Tolstoy's book, he may have agreed and started to want to return to civilization.

This connected a lot with Chris and the quote from Walden:

"I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to drive it into a corner and reduce it to its lowest terms"

The dead poets registred what was life really about, and the teacher, Mr John Keating, recognized that the boys studying in that school were not living like they should. "Seize the day boys, make your lifes extraordinary." Something that the school pilars didn't apply. The school pilars were tradition, honor, discipline and excelence.

When Neil's parents took his freedom of chosing what he could do with his life, he took his life because he prefered to be dead than being something he was not and without freedom.

Chris found something that he was uncomfortable with; he wanted to find meaning in his life, so he embarked on a very dangerous adventure and didn't stop until he found what he wanted. And to conclude the journey he had to be completely inpendent. I agree that what he did was reckless but I was inspired by his persistence because even when scared he didn't give up.

This was a part of the first question of the discussion, with this question I wondered if law and norms really do unify the community. So I asked: "Does society really unify us with laws and norms? Do some of the norms divide the population by the ones that agree with them and those that don't? "

With this question my group entered a very interesting conversation about how the system that we live in may not follow the normas stated and with that disconnect society. And that may be reason why poeple may rebel like Chris did.

When discussing what it means to be human individually, some aspects come in the conversation like freedom, independence, individualism, rights and a lot more. But being human it is also your identity, being yourself. In a community this aspects can be different, some people lose their identify so they can be part of that community, which may affect your happiness and individualism.

In our society, people depend on money to achieve what they want, so yes, depending on what type of freedom people are looking for money may make people feel more free them other.

IF SO WOULDN'T CHRIS'S PARENTS HAVE MORE FREEDOM THAN CHRIS HIMSELF?

But I don't think that Chris was looking for that type of freedom, he didn't want to be able to do whatever the wanted depending on material things like money, he wanted leave every material thing behind and still be free.

The book may also connect to evolution because Chris wanted to prove himself. Man in the past were strong and capable to things they are not anymore.

This quote is really important for understanding Chris's legacy and why he regreted his extreme actions. He was looking for finding the meaning of life, only by the end of his journey, when he was almost dying he discovered it, how sharing life with others was what was really important and that was sharing it with other people. not being completely free and independent.

His legacy is based on his change of opinions, how he chose a really dificult task and completed it and found what he was looking for and when he did, it had nothing to do with being where he was.

THE END OF THE BOOK:

Chris's image at the beginning of the book is different from that at the end. His entire journey made him more mature about his future and life decisions. He understood what life was really about when his life was ending. His legacy was persisting on a challenging journey that would help him find the meaning of life, so he worked hard to find it.
