The Catcher in the Rye is a book, narrated by Holden Caufield, a young man kicked out of Pencey Prep. He is frustrated with his peer's "phoniness" and lack of authenticity. He gets annoyed easily and judges quickly. Yet throughout the book, it is revealed to the audience that his relationships with his peers is a reflection of how he views himself. When he feels comfortable and confident with someone, he feels love and respect for them, but when he feels insecure or childish, he resorts to anger and annoyance with the others.

Holden subconsciously changes his views and opinions on himself and others based on his interaction with others. For example, the prostitute, Sunny, comes to his door, and he excitedly greets her. He feels ready to lose his virginity and is feeling quite confident in himself. But as he starts to examine her, he feels pity for her and her situation. As he imagines her life outside of this work, he suddenly becomes less interested in sex and feels very sad. His feelings about her change his feelings about himself and vice versa. He states his feelings through this, "I took her dress over to the closet and hung it up for her. It was funny. It made me feel sort of sad when I hung it up. I thought of her going in a store and buying it, and nobody in the store knowing she was a prostitute and all. The salesman probably just thought she was a regular girl when she bought it. It made me feel sad as hell -- I don't know why exactly," (95-96).

https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/catcher-in-the-rye-timeline-2b7112ee-f0f2-4ce3-a002-82165d1315f2

Holden doesn't initially speak highly of anyone, except for his brother Allie, his friend Jane, and his little sister Phoebe. He states, "You’d like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you’re talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you. If you take her to a lousy movie, for instance, she knows it’s a lousy movie. If you take her to a pretty good movie, she knows it’s a pretty good movie," (pg 67). He has nothing bad to say about his little sister, and it is clear to the audience that he feels comfortable and confident with her, thus his good feelings and words towards her.

https://www.shmoop.com/catcher-in-the-rye/phoebe-caulfield.html

Holden can be a very harsh critic to new people he encounters. For example, in chapter 15, when the nuns walked in with old looking suitcases, he immediately was disappointing and annoyed with their condition and wishes they had better suitcases. This stemmed from the fact that Holden had been judged by his suitcase back in school and when he feels insecure around his peers, he projects that onto others.
(picture is from padlet)

The background is Yellow as Holden describes himself as being "yellow" or cowardly when it comes to projecting violence onto people that have mistreated him. He is not proud of this trait as he states, "I wish I knew who'd swiped my gloves at Pencey because my hands were freezing. Not that I'd have done much about it even if I had known. I'm more of these very yellow guys...It's not fun to be yellow," (88-89).

"I felt swell for a change... I felt good, for a change," (159).

Holden is describing how he feels when he finally arrives home and is looking around in Phoebe's room. Now that he is with someone he cares about and feels comfortable with, his feelings of depression and loneliness are gone; he simply feels good.

2. "He always looked good when he was finished fixing himself up, but he was a secret slob anyway, if you knew him the way I did... He thought he was the handsomest guy in the Western Hemisphere. He was pretty handsome too- I'll admit it," (27).
Holden is talking about Stradlater's routine of getting ready. He criticizes him and calls him a secret slob, but admits he is handsome and always looks good. Holden feels insecure around him, since he does not feel handsome all the time, therefore he critiques Stradlater's cleanliness and personality.

3. " 'You give me a real pain in the ass. if you want to know the truth'... I shouldn't've said it, and I probably wouldn't've oridanrily, but she was depressing the hell out of me," (133).
Holden is speaking to Sally at the end of their date. He gets frustrated with her lack of intelligent conversational skills, and starts to feel depressed. Because of his discomfort around her and his increasing sadness, he lashes out in anger and criticizes her.

Ackley: Holden's suite-mate; Holden is very annoyed with him and purposefully tries to get rid of him, yet he goes to the movies with him and finds solitude in his room when he and Stradlater have an altercation. He has mixed feelings towards Ackley because he is unsure where he stands with him. He doesn't quite know how he feels about himself when he's with Ackley, thus he has inconsistent feelings towards his suite-mate.

Stradlater: Holden's roommate; Holden is judgmental, but jealous, of his good looks and laid-back personality, so he criticizes and ridicules him. He eventually tries to fight Stradlater, despite their obvious physical differences.

Jane: One of Holden's old friends, who goes on a date with Stradlater. He speaks very highly of her and recalls many good memories they shared together. He has an obvious attraction to her and feels comfortable around her.

Allie: Holden's little brother who died at the age of 14 due to lymphoma. Holden remembers him dearly and misses him often. He writes about his glove and how he used to write poems on it, so he could read them in the out-field. He speaks highly of him, and he is the first thing that he can think of when asked "what do you like?". Yet, Holden feels guilty about not spending more time with him.

Phoebe: Holden's little sister who he loves dearly. He respects her and believes she is very mature for her age. He enjoys spending time with her, because he feels confident in himself. Phoebe looks up to him and mirrors some of his actions and personality traits (as seen when she covers for Holden, when he's hiding). Their close bond allows Holden to feel safe with her, enabling him to show consistent feelings of love.

Sally: One of Holden's friends who he is physically attracted to, yet mentally frustrated with. He takes her on a date to a play and the ice skating rink, where he spontaneously asks her to run away with him. After realizing the ridiculousness of his offer, he retracts it and calls her " a royal pain in the ass." He gets frustrated by her vapid nature and lack of wanting something greater.

Carl Luce: One of Holden's old schoolmates from Whooton. He teaches Holden many things, most being sex life. Holden feels childish and insecure around him, so he compensates that feeling with continuous questions about Luce's sex life. He admires Luce and desires to be a bit like him, despite their obvious differences in priorities. Carl is the exception to the rule of Holden's relationship with his peers. Even when he feels less than, he does not criticize Luce, instead praise him.

Sunny: The prostitute that came to Holden's room when he stayed in the hotel. He was looking forward to his time with her, because he felt confident and sure of himself and his sexual capabilities. But once he saw her, he started thinking about her life and how sad she must be. When he hung her dress up, he thought how she must have bought the dress and no one knew that she was a prostitute. This deeply saddens him and he no longer feels in the mood to have sex. He asks if they could just talk and he becomes even more sad for her and her life. Because of his sadness, he projected onto her that she was sad and did not like her life. He felt weary for her and internally criticized her.

Lillian Simmons: One of D.B.'s old friends, who Holden dislikes. She is loud and self-seeking, and he feels a bit insecure around her because she seems to be the life of the party. He criticizes her "obnoxious behavior" and tries to quickly end their conversation when she approaches him at the restaurant.

HOW HOLDEN"S RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS INFLUENCES THE NOVEL

Holden's behavior towards his peers in the novel help to characterize himself as well as establish a theme throughout the piece. Holden's quick annoyance and projection of himself onto others help the reader to understand the way Holden is feeling about himself. This influences the readers perception of the novel as Holden is extremely defensive and will not show his emotions to the reader. Holden's relationships with his peers are a clear reflection of his emotions at the time and also reveal a theme of isolation present in the novel. The way Holden treats his peers appears to be self sabotaging as he often knows his actions are not socially acceptable, yet he continues them anyway. For example, when Holden verbally attacked Sally Hayes even though he continued to try and contact her later. Holden's confusing perception of his peers develops his character while also capturing the need for Holden to be lonely, but still be in control of some companionship.

SALINGER'S PURPOSE

In The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger portrays Holden as insecure and defensive. Salinger utilized Holden's relationship with his peers in order to reinforce the idea that Holden is isolated mentally from others and does not perform well in social occurrences. Salinger's deliberate use of Holden's projection onto others demonstrates the character Holden portrays and why he treats his peers with such disrespect at times. Salinger purposefully portrays Holden with such discontent as he is trying to characterize him in an indirect matter. While through narration Salinger is able to directly characterize Holden, the use of certain elements, such as how Holden interacts in social situations, is a more extensive form of characterization. Salinger also uses the interaction between Holden and his peers to help the reader better understand Holden and views when it comes to people around him.
