When I was 6 years old, my family moved to Los Angeles. I remember starting the first grade, speaking zero English and having the hardest time adapting. I was immediately put into the ESL program. My experience there was not the best. I was always getting taken out of class and taking all these tests. It wasn't helping me learn English, rather it made me feel alienated.

In college I stopped speaking Spanish mainly because I only spoke Spanish at home and with family. I had moved to the SFSU dorms and my friends did not speak Spanish, I felt like I was losing a small part of my identity (not being able to joke or say certain phrases in Spanish)

My linguistic identity is not to be taken advantage of... When I worked for Sac County I was asked at my interview if I spoke Spanish. I confirmed I did, and I was given a Spansh test. I passed the test and was told this would mean a pay differential for speaking Spanish. When I started the job, I was told I would NOT get the differential because my position was not a Spanish Representative position. So, I said I would not be speaking Spanish with clients.

I was an ESL student growing up since Spanish was my first language. I had substitute teacher ask me to read things without a "Hispanic" accent which made me really self-conscious about how I talked and how people perceived me. It's still something I think about all the time. When I have ESL students, I try to make the space a welcoming space for all accents and languages by speaking my own language.

My parents purposefully didn't have me retain my native language because of how schools view fluency in other languages. Even though I wasn't fluent in my parent's language, my school still placed me in ESL just because of how I looked and how my parents looked and spoke.

Although English is my native language, I always felt that the idea of an academic mode of writing was odd. I feel that keeping a more colloquial voice and writing sentences in a really simple way is the best way to make ideas accessible to learners from diverse backgrounds. But a lot of literary theory and academic articles presents really poorly worded / complicated language that is hard for learners of any linguistic background to understand. It's academic gatekeeping, and it's frustrating that that is the norm.

English is my first language, I had a hard time with actually making the sounds of the english language though, I had to go to speech therapy once a week in elementary school. Not at all the same as having to start from scratch but missing those classes and singling me out when I was taken out of class each week definitely had an impact.

Currently, I'm finding it very difficult to get things translated into Spanish for my work. I'm working on learning Spanish, but definitely am not at a place where I can translate things for others.

I was taught English first. I had friends that had to learn English as a second language. They would teach me how to say things in their language. I would teach them slang. I was able to finally understand their pain when I was living in Paris France and my French was not very good at the time. It is frustrating trying to communicate and you have no idea what the words are to communicate. It can be uncomfortable being corrected.
