Improvisation skills
What I've learned from today's class is that improvisation needs listening and feelings skills. When done with a partner its easy to see this as you can feel your partner and you are aware of their space even if you don't see them, you can hear them or like today's class feel where they are. This will help me in the future by giving myself a starting point e.g. pretend I have a crayon attached to a body part and I have to draw shapes with it, switching from body part to body part every so often.

This week we looked at exchanging weight between our legs and feet and how different positions of the feet will make it harder to move them. I worked with Morgan Mclennann and we found it easier to move our legs when laid on our back rather than when we were on all fours and had to lift our legs behind us and move our feet that way. I think we found it hard because we couldn't see what the other person was doing, we had to feel what they were doing and it was very difficult in doing so. We also had to be aware of each others space and where they were.

Today in class we did a relaxing exercise. We were put in pairs and we had to give a full body massage to our partner and then we switched and they gave me a massage. When I was laid on the floor all I had to do was focus on my breathing and just relax and when my partner would lift my head, leg or arm I felt really light, but when she gave feedback, she said that I was really heavy. When Sarah was moving my leg around in circles, sometimes I would feel myself trying to stop the motion instead of relaxing my leg would tense up a little and I would try and stop her moving my leg so there was a little bit of force there. But then she told me to breath and relax and she said that I had let go and started to let her move my leg more with ease.

Today we started off with a crayon warm up where we have visualize a crayon on the back of our neck and picture that we are drawing something and we then have to imagine that crayon on another body part. This is exploration of movement and makes it easier to create something. We then went in a circle and each one of us went in and explored our own body parts. Working with this exploration doesn't leave room for mistakes because we could do anything and if we couldn't think of anything to do then we could just use stillness, because stillness can be apart of the choreography too.

This improvisation lesson, 2nd years taught 1st years their solos based on a choreography of their choice. Paige Mainwaring taught me hers and her practitioner was Sidi Larbi Cherkoui. 1st years also had to share some of our solos to our Partner. This benefited me because it forced me to use my flexibility and extension in ways that I didn't think I would ever be bale to. Paige was very supportive and helped me with movements that I was unsure of. She didn't rush and went through hers bit by bit. Teaching a piece of my solo also helped me as it made me focus on the different dynamics as she would only have performed as I showed her, so if I taught her with not much enthusiasm and low effort then she would have done the same and that's not what I wanted for my solo. What I learnt from this was that Space, Actions and Dynamics are really important when re teaching movement because you want the performer to perform with the same intention as you.

There are many ways of bringing attention to different body parts. One way would be to lead with it, you could enhance this by using different actions while leading with it.
Bringing attention to body parts is something we do nearly everyday for example if we hurt our self then we hide it, we hide the space we have hurt, where as in dance we can hide a body part even if it isn't hurt just to bring attention to it. Another way to draw attention to a body part would be to expose it and do this by using different dynamics.

Relationships are a key thing in a duet, trio, or any ensemble of dancers. To show a relationship you can make eye - contact with your partners this makes an ensemble look stronger. Also any form of contact and Lifts make a group of dancers look like they have a relationship rather than just dancing solos. Working as part of a duet I find that finding moments of contact or lead and follow is easy because it fills in gaps that you can't fill, if your partner is moving and you can't think of what to do then follow them, do what they are doing this then also looks like canon but it isn't canon.
