Thruaman sometimes went and lived with his grandma who ran an illegal bar in her home. Thruaman was constantly sick and would have to drop out of school years at a time to recover from illness and heart attacks.worked as a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles. in 1925 he worked as an editor and a writer of novels, plays and journalistic articles. Thruaman apartment served as a central meeting for African American authors and artists.Thruaman produced a play that debuted on broadway in 1929, and the novels "The Blacker the Berry:A Novel of Negro Life "(1929), and also " Infants of the Spring" (1932). He got married to Louise Thompson on Aug 22, 1928.
