The theme emerges when the protagonist Equality 7-2521 sets the background of society. He says that It is a sin to think words no others think and they must talk as “We” and not “I”. It says in the text, “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone”(Rand 1).

Equality 7-2521 explains that men must not notice women and women must not notice men. It says, “We wish to write this name. We wish to speak it, but we dare not speak it above a whisper. For men are forbidden to take notice of women, and women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women, they whose name is Liberty 5-3000, and we think of no others”(Rand 11).

Personification: "The walls are cracked and water runs upon them in thin threads without sound, black and glistening as blood"(Rand 2). Equality 7-2521 is writing in the tunnel he found and describes the water running down the walls as having qualities such as black and glistening as blood. The author adds this personification to help the reader better understand the important little details in the story and the help it come to life.

The text says, "we have much to say to a wretch who have broken all the laws and who boast of their infamy! How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers? And if the Council had decreed that you be a Street Sweeper, how dared you think that you could be of greater use to men than in sweeping the streets?"(Rand 26).

From this quote, it is inferred that Equality 7-2521 and the rest of the men are being taught that it is bad to think on their own and that all men must be alike. This is taking away their individualism by having society think that everyone needs to look and be exactly alike.

This quote shows that the World Council has control over the society and is furious for Equality 7-2521 for thinking that his mind holds greater wisdom then the minds of his brothers. This shows that the theme, “to give oneself over to a collectivism society is to lose your identity” is being presented throughout the story because none of the men can think for themselves and they all have to follow rules that give them no individuality or freedom.

Simile: "Liberty's body was straight and thin as a blade of iron. Their eyes were dark and hard and glowing, with no fear in them, no kindness and no guilt. Their hair was golden as the sun; their hair flew in the wind, shining and wild, as if it defied men to restrain it"(Rand 11). Equality 7-2521 describes seeing the Golden one in the fields. The author uses this type of simile to help the readers understand what a character looks like and gives every detail to tell how the character looks. Using this type of figurative language helps to deeper understand what characters look like.
