1. Set a Respectful Tone - This means to use suitable language when you're on the internet; how you text your friend is not how you should craft an email for your professor. This also includes punctuation, grammar, etc. Misspellings and grammatical errors make writing less professional. It is important for young children to begin to think about how others will perceive their actions, this aids in building their social emotional skills.

2. Think before you type - This means to think through what you are putting on the internet before posting publicly. This is very important for young children to understand, for once you post something, it can never really be wiped from the internet. It is very important to stress what should and should not be posted online for their safety, so they won't be left vulnerable.

https://learnsafe.com/what-not-to-share-creating-family-guidelines-for-sharing-information-online/
https://www.rasmussen.edu/student-experience/college-life/netiquette-guidelines-every-online-student-needs-to-know/

1. No Yelling - No yelling refers to not writing in all caps, LIKE THIS. In most situations, typing in all uppercase is not appropriate. This will cause content to not be taken seriously. It is important for young students to know this for the future when writing to people they want to be respected by.

2. Don't Plagiarize - Plagiarizing is when you take someone's work without giving them credit. This is very important to be aware of from a young age because it can be very serious later on in life. You want to learn how to paraphrase ideas and craft your own ideas, or if you want to use information from someone else know how to properly indicate that the idea is that of someone else.

https://www.rasmussen.edu/student-experience/college-life/netiquette-guidelines-every-online-student-needs-to-know/
https://medium.com/@carmen.zhang/netiquette-the-dos-and-the-don-ts-d7cfe146d09d

This video shows the way in which our tone and word choice impact how others interpret what we say. It stresses the importance of where we put emphasis and how this can alter the way in which others are impacted by our words. Online we can not hear tone if we are reading something, so grammar plays an even bigger role in establishing a respectful tone.

I learned that there are a lot of components that go into being a good citizen online. As a generation, being online is something we are very used to so I don't feel like we take much time to really think about the choices we make. However, there are many times I will go through old videos and notes I have and be very grateful I thought before I posted. Netiquette was the term I focused on primarily and I learned how it encompasses so much of how we interact online. It is not only regarding privacy like I talked about but also how to sound professional, what to share and what not to share, and rules regarding plagiarism as well, to name a few. I also didn't realize how prevalent these ideas were and how many lessons there were for young students. It is a very different world for this generation of young people, which is something important to remember as a future educator.

Before doing this research, I didn't think very much about how much children could access the internet and put private information, especially that of their parents, online. As mentioned previously, the world of technology is very different from when we were young learners. I remember the primary times I would be on the internet would be to play a few games or practice typing. The only screen time I had at home until getting iPods later on, was the television really. I didn't realize how important our role is as future educators to teach about technology, specifically the etiquette used online. It is something I learned on my own as an older child navigating new technology whereas my students will be exposed to more technology than is even known now. Therefore, it is vital as educators to teach about these rules, or manners, for interacting online not only to aid in their learning journeys but to protect the children from harm.

My research strengthened the importance of teaching netiquette and digital citizenship to young learners. Something very important for them to know from a young age is how to protect themselves, knowing what to post and what not to post is a big part of this. My research also confirmed the importance of my role as a future educator. As talked about above, my future students are growing up in a different world that is becoming more technologically advanced everyday. Concerns about technology were not as prevalent in my education as a young learner. However, as times change, so does the curriculum. My research strengthened the idea that these ideas of netiquette and digital citizenship are vital to discuss and learn about in the classroom. They help students to know how to navigate the internet, interact with others, sound professional, and stay safe. These skills are important throughout life, and starting these skills young allows for them to feel natural as they grow and continue to live in the technologicially advanced world we live in.

This relates to the don'ts of digital citizenship because you shouldn't post anything that you dont want to last forever. The video explains how anything that you post online, you are "stuck with" and whether or not you delete something it is always somewhere online. I think this is very important to teach kids from a young age because this can be dangerous.

Being a good digital citizen starts with knowing what a good citizen in general looks like.
First, I would have the fourth graders break up into groups and come up with characteristics of a good citizen in society.
What would a good citizen would do for others? What would a good citizen would look like in the community?

After the students come up with their answers in groups I will have them share with the class and compare and contrast each others answers.
I will collectively write an answer on the board and we will talk about how it is important to be a good citizen in general.

Then I will introduce the topic of digital citizenship and it's similarities to what we just talked about but online.

I will also talk about circumstances when it is important that the students specifically are expected to be good citizens.
For example, explaining digital citizenship with texting, posting on social media, or even using educational websites like math games.

I will then have them watch the videos on the do's and dont's of digital citizenship.

I learned a lot about being safe and responsible in a way that I had not yet learned that much about which is online. Online learning is constantly growing as technology progresses through the years. In elementary schools today, students use technology daily, use computers for everyday tasks, and some even have smart phones at young ages. As the use of technology in the classroom and in general grows, it is important to learn about digital citizenship and netiquette. When it comes to posting online, I learned about digital footprint and staying safe in that regard. Not only is it important to protect your personal information on websites but being sure to only post things that are appropriate and safe because even when deleted, are never fully deleted. When it comes to interactions online, I learned more about how being polite and helpful is part of being a good digital citizen. Many things that I have learned about being a good citizen in life and being safe and smart is connected to being a good digital citizen and having good netiquette.

Before doing this project or doing any research I did not consider how necessary it is to teach these topics to young learners and how to do so. Explaining the dangers of the internet and how to navigate having good netiquette to young ages is interesting because I didn't learn about any of that when I was young. There are many subtopics within digital citizenship and netiquette including digital footprint, posting online, treating others the way you want to be treated, etc. Including this in the classroom is so important and is something I hadn't considered until learning more about it.

After doing research and finding sources and videos to go along with it, it confirmed just how important it is to teach netiquette and digital citizenship in the classroom as a future teacher. I learned a lot about website security and student information and it is important to explain and teach the students about the internet's capabilities. Technology is only expanding and therefore making this more important to learn more about.
