The challenges and misconceptions of commuting by bicycle

Who is your audience (what type of people would go to this film? Be specific!)
I hope my audience is people who usually drive short distances (5 miles or less) to work and often see cyclists on their commute. 

What is the important point this screenplay should make?
Although a bicycle that might slow you down 10-30 seconds to pass, on it sits a human being not that different from you who doesn't want to die and has just chosen an alternative method of transportation.

What do you want the audience to do and/or feel?
Enlightened or educated. I'd love humanize some of the road rage that is directed at cyclists.

Please describe a minimum of two characters using this guide.
PETE (AGE 31) Pete is a very average human being who may occasionally be called a hipster. He's average height, average weight, has a receding hairline and often wears what he believes are trendy glasses in the hopes that the students he teaches at the high school level will think he is remotely hip or interesting. He also chooses to ride his bike to work a lot. He has found it to be a great way to start his morning and loves that he never has to deal with all of the frustration that cam come with driving.

BRAD (AGE 40) Brad is a good guy. He's 40 years old, is a wonderful father of 3 kids who are between the ages of 10-15. He drives a suburban in order to transport his kids all around town for their various activities. At times he can feel like a Taxi service. He doesn't particularly like driving but feels like he doesn't have any other choice given his currently family situation. He is often frustrated when he is driving because of the amount of time he has to spend shuttling people around.

Why does this story matter to you? Why did you choose it?
During the school year I ride to work a minimum of 4 days a week. In the last 3-4 years I've put more miles on bike than I have my car.

Why will your audience be interested in this?
Hopefully because they either are interested in an alternative form of transportation (especially in the beautiful weather months in Phoenix) or because they often see bikes on their own commute.

How will you grab their attention?
I plan to use aggressive jumps in my screenplay that are intentionally a little disorienting but down allow the reader/viewer to get bored.

  • I will most likely record this myself with my bike on my bike stand and rotating the crank arm.
2 - Cars driving up and down the street
  • This is easy enough to record organically. I plan to find a busy intersection on Central near the lightrail to mimic my normal commute
3 - The Light Rail
  • I'll record this after school at the central and Campbell station because that is when it's most busy.
4 - Dialogue
  • I plan to use my own voice and my brother's voice as the two main characters. We will record at my house using a comforter as a sound blanket to make sure the audio is clean.
