P6 Thesis and Evidence/Commentary Workshop by Paige Snyder

PROMPT: In George Gascoigne’s poem “For That He Looked Not upon Her,” published in 1573, the speaker explains why he holds his head low. Read the poem carefully. Then, in a well-written paragraph, analyze how Gascoigne uses literary elements and techniques to convey the complex attitude of the speaker.

Gascoigne compares himself to various animals to show his unwillingness to look at the women before him again. He states, "The scorched fly which once hath 'scaped the flame will hardly come to play again with fire." He says this to compare himself with a fly. He already involved himself with the woman before, last time he got burned, and he won't mess with her again. He keeps his head down in order to avoid confrontation. Flies are attracted to light, and have been burned by fire as a result. This fact is what causes him to compare his situation with the fly.
