Genre is a key concept of a music magazine as it is what outlines the overall piece. Music magazines typically relate to one genre; whether that be Pop, Rock or Hip-Hop. The genre will influence what is within the magazine in terms of features such as artists, competitions, fashion and more.

Audience

The audience is also a key concept as without an audience there would be no magazine. The audience can be broken down into sex, age and location; all three of these factors can influence the interest of people. The audience will look for features in the magazine which will be seen as entertainment/pleasure. Interests in fashion and artists( similar to genre) will allow the audience to find enjoyment within a magazine.

The institution is the company which owns and / or distributes the magazine. These institutes can polar between big institutes to small niche institutes. Brand image allows an institute to stand out from the other companies. Institutes such as Q, Billboard and NME are all very recognisable companies which are well known.

Representation

This is all to do with how the magazine is presented. This can all do with how people, events and places are presented; it allows it to be symbolised without an explanation.
However representation is not always straight forward and the image presented can give off the wrong message.
