Why do so many Americans not vote?

In any given election, between 35 and 60 percent of eligible voters don’t cast a ballot. Millions of Americans only vote when they feel like their vote will make a difference. Many people choose not to vote for a variety of reasons. Some feel their vote won't make a difference, especially in areas where one party consistently wins. On the other hand, people that live in swing states, tend to vote more. Others are disillusioned with the political system, believing that politicians don't represent their interests. Inconveniences like long lines, restrictive voting laws, or lack of polling locations can also discourage participation. In 36 states, voters need a photo ID, putting 21 million Americans at risk of being excluded due to the financial barrier.

What is being done against electoral fraud?

Federal election crimes fall into three main categories: illegal campaign funding, voter fraud (such as voting under a false identity), and civil rights violations, which involve threats to prevent voting. To ensure fair elections, the U.S. regularly updates voter rolls (people who are eligible to vote), and some states require voter ID to confirm identities at polling places. Mail-in and absentee (if you live abroad) ballots are checked through signature verification, and Cybersecurity measures protect voting systems from interference, while law enforcement looks out for potential fraud. Finally, votes are often recounted to confirm results.

Donald Trump continues to wield power due to several key factors. His loyal base within the Republican Party ensures that many politicians rely on or fear his influence. His constant media presence, even through legal controversies, keeps him in the spotlight, allowing him to frame narratives that resonate with his supporters. Additionally, "Trumpism" has redefined the party, ensuring that his influence persists. His potential 2024 candidacy further cements his relevance in U.S. politics, despite no official position.

The U.S. election process involves two major phases: the primary elections, where political parties choose their candidates, and the general election. In 2024, citizens will vote for president using the Electoral College system. Each state has a certain number of electoral votes based on population, and the candidate who wins the majority in a state typically takes all its electoral votes. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win. The election also includes voting for members of Congress.
