Any goods bought by the colonists from other countries in Europe had to go to England first and be taxed before they could be sent to the Americas.

I helped create an American identity by providing more tax rights to the American colonists. At first, the colonists accepted the idea of the British Colonial Policies, but later the colonists came to resent the British Restrictions. The colonists wanted to make their manufactured goods. Many merchants began smuggling goods, without paying taxes and without having to get permission from the government. This led to a conflict between the American colonies and England.
