She went through a lot, having to raise children on her own. This chapter, more specifically, focuses on her life after she gets remarried to Abel. Not only was Abel controlling, but he hits Patricia and even shoots her in her head in the book. The impact on Trevor Noah and his mother must have been detrimental since she could have been murdered. Since this book is from Trevor Noah's viewpoint, we hear about how his young self felt having to watch his mom go through this abuse and how he could not do anything about it. On pages 256 and 257, Patricia Noah goes to the police the first time Abel hits her and when she gets there, the police completely takes Abel's side and shows no consideration of what she is saying. At this point of the chapter, Trevor explains how his view of the police, who he thought was supposed to protect people, completely changed. This is why we think chapter 18 of "Born a Crime" correlates with the essential question, "How does the environment affect me?"
